Accession: 009.07.004
Editorial Title: John L. S. Roberts to Mary Baker Eddy, March 27, 1883
Author: John L. S. Roberts
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: March 27, 1883
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by John L. S. Roberts on printed stationery of Geo. L. Roberts & Bros. Counsellors at Law and sent from Boston, Massachusetts.
Editorial Note: Roberts tells Mary Baker Eddy that he has received from her the papers he wanted, along with the note (not extant) she enclosed. He has also received her check for $90 ($2,350.58 in 2016), which pays in full the $150 ($3,917.64 in 2016) that is his fee for representing her in the lawsuit, Eddy v. Arens. He asks that Eddy give him a fresh copy of the writings bearing Edward J. Arens' name, as the copy Eddy previously gave him has many marks and remarks that he doesn't feel would be advisable to produce in court. Roberts spent the previous evening reading the chapter, "Demonology," that had been published in the third edition of Eddy's book, Science and Health. He found the chapter particularly interesting as he had already received hints from Eddy as to the character and activities of Arens and other "mesmerists" she writes about in that chapter.
