In your lastEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. you spoke of Mr. Miller, the newly appointed lecturerEditorial Note: Miller was appointed to the Board of Lectureship in 1899.. The sweet nature of the man you doubtless perceived in the ClassEditorial Note: William P. McKenzie and William N. Miller were both students in Mary Baker Eddy's last Normal class in November 1898.. He is not a manufacturer of false concepts of others, but when they are given him he holds them tenaciously. The chivalry of his nature makes him loyal to everything that his lesser half thinks. Everyone who has dealt with him by himself feels the honesty of the man. A great redemption might come to him if he were allowed alone to meet ScientistsEditorial Note: Christian Scientists and face new conditions. Need I say more-
There is a tendency appearing in the Field. Once you told us of the Babel of SoundsGen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. Gen 11:2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. Gen 11:3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. Gen 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Gen 11:5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. Gen 11:6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Gen 11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. Gen 11:8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Gen 11:9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. that went up from the pulpits, & then gave us one eternal sermonEditorial Note: This is a reference to the change from personal preaching to prepared readings from the Bible and Science and Health for the Sunday sermons.. Today the voices of ScientistsEditorial Note: Christian Scientists are being heard through the Press, but not always wisely. Papers offer space on condition of so many subscriptions & as in preaching the ill-adapted were most willing to do it, so in contributions to the press, the excited, extreme, or at least untranquilized thought dashes forth unwisely. Carol Norton feels that there should sometime be a Press Association for Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. matter, all of which should be carefully edited & so guarded before publication. He believes that the lecturers can to a large extent supply the present needs. In the future however a greater work than twelve men can do will be needed. For this need we await the supply of Good that is laid upPs 31:19 Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men! , & know that Mother will show us to it in God's way.
Deep gratitude is in my heart, precious Mother for this place & work. The new churchEditorial Note: McKenzie helped organize First Church of Christ, Scientist, Cambridge, Massachusetts, which was established in January 1899. grows sweetly in love.
