Before we went to ConcordEditorial Note: Concord, New Hampshire. and heard what you said, I had hoped that the Dr. could, would be aroused to see his condition, repent, and confess every wrong to you and overcome it, as Mr. Knapp and I had tried to have him do. This thought came to me, "Is the Dr. a sinner above all others?" ("the first members") and your reply to us in the language of Jesus. "I tell ye nay, for except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perishLuke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. ", also "he who is without sin let him cast the first stoneJohn 8:7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. ".
I did not know the enormity of his sin against you until that day, and never before felt the last hope of saving him had died out. To my sense it is dreadful, frightful, was and is a sorrowful occasion. It seemed worseAs Written:worese than a funeral. When you asked me what I would think of my sonEditorial Note: Flavia Stickney Knapp had three sons: Sprague A. Knapp (1867-1954), Ralph H. Knapp (1875-1943), and Bliss Knapp (1877-1958). using me as Dr. has you I couldn't conceive of such a thing, yet I know I would strive to save him as you have done hoping for the change and reformation. I know that is what many a mother has done even when the case seemed hopeless. It has seemed since I saw you, there is no possible hope for the Dr., and I felt like running before so much error as was uncovered. O if I could see the Dr. crushed, heartbrokenAs Written:heart broken and penitent I should have hope. Is there no way to do this, and save him from the awful future before him if he is not awakened. Is there anything the students can do for him other than try to overcome this to our own sense. Of course if you can't awaken and save him we need not hope to, but it seems we should see if there is anything in our thought hindering him. The students felt so badly for poor Mr. Colman and would make every effort to save him, and why should we not make the effort in behalf of this unfortunate one, for his case seems a worse one, and in greater need of help. It is a dreadful thing for you to have so much to meet from him and the rest of us. O that it might be otherwise, and that we could be a help and comfort to you instead, for the untiring watch, love and help you have given us all, friend and foe. I pray that I may understand your meaning of what you said "I will have mercy and not sacrificeMatt 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. ", and practice it.

this has been an uncovering of us all for I felt some like the woman
of SamariaEditorial Note: The account of the woman of Samaria at the well
can be found in John 4:1-42John 4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more
disciples than John, John 4:2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) John 4:3 He left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee. John 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria. John 4:5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. John 4:6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. John 4:7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
John 4:8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) John 4:9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest
drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that
saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have
given thee living water. John 4:11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep:
from whence then hast thou that living water? John 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof
himself, and his children, and his cattle? John 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but
the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into
everlasting life. John 4:15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come
hither to draw. John 4:16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. John 4:17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well
said, I have no husband: John 4:18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in
that saidst thou truly. John 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. John 4:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place
where men ought to worship. John 4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in
this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. John 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father
in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when
he is come, he will tell us all things. John 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. John 4:27 ¶And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet
no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her? John 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the
men, John 4:29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
John 4:30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. John 4:31 ¶In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. John 4:32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. John 4:33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat? John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish
his work. John 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields;
for they are white already to harvest. John 4:36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both
he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. John 4:37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. John 4:38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye
are entered into their labours. John 4:39 ¶And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman,
which testified, He told me all that ever I did. John 4:40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with
them: and he abode there two days. John 4:41 And many more believed because of his own word; John 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard
him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. . In particular,
Knapp is referring to her words at the very end of the account in John 4:28-29John 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the

the destruction of NinevahEditorial Note: The fate of Ninevah can be found in the book of Jonah, see especially Jonah 3:1-10Jonah 3:1 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Jonah 3:2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. Jonah 3:3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now
Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. Jonah 3:4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet
forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. Jonah 3:5 ¶So the people of
Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them
even to the least of them. Jonah 3:6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Jonah 3:7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd
nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: Jonah 3:8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let
them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Jonah 3:9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
Jonah 3:10 ¶And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of
the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. . was

This morning I saw much to encourage as it seems I have been overcomingAs Written:over coming the error which you exposed. I also saw and said, I see it was the wisdom of Almighty God speaking through you that day. I see much in it. A grand lesson, and shall hope to profit by it.
