I have a serious question to meet todayAs Written:to-day, and I am distressed beyond words, because I do not know what to say or do, under the circumstances, so I come to you dearest, lest I may be in error, and I know you will show me what to do. I have your beautiful PoemEditorial Note: Christ and Christmas by Mary Baker Eddy, published on December 2, 1893. oh! dear one, so sweet, so like the tones of the dear Christ, & the conception so beautiful, but as I show it; all stand aghast at the illustrations, which both critics and those who are not connoisseurs say, are caricatures, having no artistic merit in proportion, perspective, or execution. The friends of the CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. have told me that if the critics and press, get this to review before Christmas, they will use it against ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science. I find all who see the illustrations say the same thing, while the ScientistsEditorial Note: Christian Scientists look pained and grieved, but open not their lips, lest there is some reason which they do not understand The highest art would have been weak to have given a setting to the beautiful words, and only this should ever be used in your exquisite living thoughts. I do notAs Written:donot know what to do in regard to circulating them here. Now dearest I assure you, I am taking up my crossMatt 16:24 ¶Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Mark 8:34 ¶And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Luke 9:23 ¶And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. in daring to write this, and only because I fear you may be made to appear at disadvantage, and because I love you more than words can tell, do I tell you darling that - this work is denounced as cruel to you, and to the CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science.. I knew there are students who have no sense of artistic merit, who would take this without a word, while the enemy rejoices for an opportunity to put you before the public in an unfavorable light; I feel the man who has done this work, has either no idea of art, or there is a new standard of art, which none here have conceivedAs Written:concieved. I am waiting to know what to do If you say they are to be circulated, I will do my best to get them accepted, and if I am doing wrong to write this, I fear nothing for my motive is too high and true to cause me to suffer long. I am only looking to God for guidance as I strive to protect my Mother from unjust criticism, or from being sacrificed by ignorant amateurs As Written: amatuers I ask dearest that you will help me to see the Truth in this for I am listening for His voice.
