Editorial Title: James Ackland to Mary Baker Eddy, June 4, 1882
Author: James Ackland
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: June 4, 1882
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by James Ackland on lined paper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Editorial Note: This is primarily a sympathy letter, written by James Ackland to Mary Baker Eddy upon the death of her husband, Asa Gilbert Eddy (June 3, 1882). Ackland had recently received a letter from Mary Baker Eddy (not extant), which gave him the impression that Asa Gilbert Eddy was recovering from the symptoms of illness he had been manifesting recently. Ackland calls Asa Gilbert Eddy a martyr, suggesting that he believes that Asa Eddy's death had been caused by mental malpractice, and Ackland says that he can hardly realize that he has died. He says that his relationship with Asa Gilbert Eddy has been characterized by never-to-be-forgotten kindness and goodwill, and he extends to Mary Baker Eddy his heartfelt sympathy and prayers in her great bereavement. He adds that God must be her main consolation and the consciousness of duty her unfailing hope. Ackland cannot go to Boston now due to his financial condition, but he will try to go during the summer.
