My dear Teacher

I don’t know as you are at home but trust this will reach you. We, your Students, met at Dr. Avery’s last Thursday eve – for the purpose of organizing as your disciples and also to hear your message to us. I was glad to meet the doctor & wifeEditorial Note: Olive L. Avery I think them valuable Students, at least they give promise of being now. I trust when they are “ tried in the fireI Pet 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, I Pet 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, I Pet 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. I Pet 1:6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: I Pet 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: ” they will stand the test. We had a pleasant, and, what was pronounced a profitable meeting by all present. It was the first time I had met with them, and I was pleased with most of them, but they haven’t As Written: have’nt got their eyes half open yet, indeed I don’t know as any of us have. They seemed to look to me as authority on you your views and I tried to be faithful. I think I voiced your sentiments when I said that, no one should be admitted as a member except your personally taught Students, I said. If we are to expect help and support from Mrs Eddy we must accept her as our leader, obey her commands, whether we understand them or not, and we cannot expect her to give help to persons taught by this one, and that one when she cannot help her own Students as much as she would like to. I said this because there was a desire on the part of some to take in all the Metaphysicians who might like to join us. I said no we must draw the line somewhere and I for one will not endorse any except her Students as I don’t consider that any others are properly taught. Was I or was I not right? The idea of our messing up with such botches as there are here, I won’t.

Some thought you would make an exception to Chicago, I said, She will not I am sure, but if you don’t wish to take my word for it consult her, I cannot tell all that was said in this limited letter, but you know that I’m not afraid to speak on the side of right and Justice. I am very well. I have got your bookEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy in the hands of some of the first families here, they are all reading it with a great deal of interest, and no doubt if you came here next year againEditorial Note: Mary Baker Eddy taught a class in Chicago, Illinois in May 1884. you will have many of them for Students. Mrs Noyes thinks as I do, she is one of the faithful ones. She sees now that I was right and she frankly admits it too. Dear Mrs Eddy can’t you think of Alice (Mrs. Poole) a little she is not feeling right. I will do in the future as I have in the past all I can to keep her faithful, and I could if I was where I could talk with her, but now something As Written: some thing more than a letter is requisite. She is smart and a good healer – let us win her back to the Truth. It makes me feel dreadfully to think of anyone As Written: any one thinking they can prosper long that are not governed by Christian principles. Life is not long enough, to indulge or foster malice and jealousy. Please don’t ever let her know I said this to you, I am going to write her and shall try to set her right, for I know I have more influence over her than anyone As Written: any one except it be yourself. We have had a lovely summer here. Hope you are going to have a little leisure As Written: leasure .

If you have the time please write me whether I was right or not in what I said at the meeting. We have another AugustAs Written:Aug. 14th.

With much love and deep gratitude I am Your Student
