Accession: 206.34.004
Editorial Title: Ainsworth Rand Spofford to Calvin A. Frye, November 30, 1883
Author: Ainsworth Rand Spofford
Recipient: Calvin A. Frye
Date: November 30, 1883
Manuscript Description: Printed form letter concerning the copyrighting of periodicals, signed by Ainsworth Rand Spofford, Librarian of Congress, from Washington, D.C.
Editorial Note: Spofford is replying to a letter (not extant), dated November 28, 1883, in which Calvin A. Frye inquired about the requirements for copyrighting periodicals. The form letter reply, signed by Spofford, states that one cannot copyright the title of a periodical without reference to its contents. The procedure should be to send two copies of each issue of the periodical to the Library of Congress, along with the copyright fees. However, this can be done by sending the fees and titles of a number of forthcoming issues in advance and thus have the right to place a copyright notice in each issue of the periodical.
