Yours of the 9"Editorial Note: See F00100. is come like a benediction of Love, which it
surely is. I am so glad to know what is claimed against me as a Christian Scientist.
John says: "Who is liar but he
that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not
the Father.I John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. I John 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. " How could Jesus be the Christ and be born in violation of the
moral law; and also of guilt of conscience, and of basest
beliefs of lust? "Into the real and ideal man the
sensual element cannot enter.Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures332:31Into the real and ideal man the fleshly element cannot
enter. Thus it is that Christ illustrates the coincidence,333:1or spiritual agreement, between God and man in His
image."
Dear Teacher, long before I came to Christian Science I accepted the teaching of the
Congregational Church concerning the Immaculate Conception under
the preaching of Rev. Chas. G. FinneyEditorial Note: Charles Grandison Finney (1792-1875) was a
Presbyterian minister and leader in the Second Great Awakening in the United States.
His religious views led him to promote social reforms such as abolitionism and equal
education for women and African Americans. From 1835 he taught at Oberlin College
in
Ohio, and he served as its second president from 1851 to 1865. of OberlinEditorial Note: Oberlin, Ohio, but like so many did not understand it. Christian Science explained
it, but I, in a vague way, thought as did many Normal students, that sufficient spiritual understanding would make such a
thing possible todayAs Written:to-day. Mrs. Larminie told me
that she knew of three instances of pure mental conceptions among her students. My
only
thought then, was, that she must be indeed a most spiritual teacher. Soon after that
the
revised Retrospection and
IntrospectionEditorial Note: Retrospection and
Introspection by Mary Baker Eddy came out, and among the first things that I
saw was,– "but
in our time no Christian Scientist will give chimerical wings
to his imagination, or advance speculative theories as to the recurrence of such
events.Mary Baker Eddy, Retrospection and Introspection70:8We do not question the authenticity of the Scriptural
70:9narrative of the Virgin-mother and Bethlehem babe, and
the Messianic mission of Christ Jesus; but in our time
no Christian Scientist will give chimerical wings to his
70:12imagination, or advance speculative theories as to the
recurrence of such events." While I had not taught with sufficient
spiritual understanding to have students who thought about such possibilities for
themselves, for I had not thought about them myself, yet when I read those
words I waked up to the fact that I must find the Science of
the Immaculate Conception; I have
found
it. In my reaching out for the Scientific premise and
conclusion, both sides — that is, the Jewish and orthodox Christian — were
clearly presented to me, and the Scientific Truth – which was in neither —
was a revelation, and one of the strongest confirmations to me of the
Divinity of Divine Science. I do not teach anythingAs Written:any thing outside of "Recapitulation," I leave, as you advise, the abstinence As Written: abstince problems to the unfolding that comes through demonstration. Again, I say, I
have no theories or personal fads to set forth or uphold. I want nothing but what Science and
HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy gives. I have no private interpretations or explanations to
give or to hold.
You remember, dear Teacher, what a conflict was waged against you, and against me,
when
I went through the Primary Class. Truth foresaw, and you uttered its prophecy, when
you
said; "The battle is to be fought over your head." How little I apprehended what you
saw! I see somewhat now. It has been one long struggle for Life and Light. Jesus said;
"Fear not, I have overcome the world,John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world
ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. " then the overcoming is possible for me
if I "cling steadfastly
to God and His ideaMary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures495:14When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling
495:15steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His
likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither
fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and
495:18calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious — as
Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or
belief in, that which Life is not. Let Christian Science,
495:21instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of
being, and this understanding will supplant error with
Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence dis‐
495:24cord with harmony.." My prayer is to reflect Love
more fully,– to die to sense that I may be conscious of
Life in Christ; and for instantaneous healing and the
sure healing from sin and sickness of myself and others.
I look to the Church here to be a healing Church; not merely another denomination among, or added to other denominations and having no more spiritual power. To demonstrate this means "prayer and fastingMatt 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. ," it means faithfulness. I feel that I am approaching As Written: appoaching a crisis that means advancement in spiritual understanding. The Father has indeed "encompassed" me the through these years, and the "still watersPs 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. " will appear soon. Better be saved "so as by fireI Cor 3:15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. " in the way of ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science than to wait upon the self-destruction of error.
Your letter gives me new courage and hope, while its abundance of Love brings to me a deeper meaning of meekness and humility.
Mrs. Roberts, the teacher who led me to you, and who stood sponsor for my fidelity, told me that some eastern students told her that I believed that it was a duty to marry and bear children, and that I had searched through Science and Health for confirmation of my theory, and claimed to have found it. Mrs. Roberts was surprised to hear it, and did not believe it could be a fact, unless it had crept into my thought while I was away from her.
Now, if one thing more than another in Christian Science was "good news," indeed, it was that God did not need that children should be born , and that there is no material conception and birth , no human parentage. While, in teaching, I leave that subject for Truth to unfold to students as they through demonstration are fitted to receive the "revelations of Divine Science," and do not encourage the breaking of marriage vows through pharisaism As Written: phariseeism or fear, yet I find that my married students reach, mutually, the perception and demonstration of the chastity of the marriage bed, calmly, majestically, honestly and spiritually, without any intermeddling on my part. Science and Health – "endued," as it is, "with the Spirit without measureJohn 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. ," will do that work, if the student truly desires the christlikeness As Written: Christ-likeness .
Mortal sense has said that, because I had had the spurious teaching, I had farther to go before I could reach spiritual understanding, and has continued to say that I am slow to see; but this is true, when I do see, I see clearly, and am firmly held by the Truth. I cannot pretend to see. The scales have been falling fast from my eyesActs 9:18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. since I saw the terrible darkness of believing in human and moral goodness. Don't I know now that there is but one righteousness, and that can never be found in mortal, material belief? "To have no righteousness of my ownPhil 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, Phil 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: " demonstrated, is the work, individually, that I see before me.
Is it too late for my $1000.Editorial Note: 1000.00 to be received? I hope not. It will be sent most lovingly and trustingly.
