Editorial Title: Julia Field-King to Mary Baker Eddy, May 24, 1895
Author: Julia Field-King
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Annotator: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: May 24, 1895
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Julia Field-King on her lined printed stationery from St. Louis, Missouri. Includes envelope with a notation in Mary Baker Eddy's handwriting.
Editorial Note: In 1895, Mary Baker Eddy's student, Julia Field-King undertook her own research project to prove that Eddy was a direct descendant of King David of Israel. The background of this endeavor was known as the "Anglo-Israel theory," which promoted the idea that the Anglo-Saxon "race" was in fact descended from the ten lost tribes of Israel. Field-King was particularly influenced by a 26 volume work titled Our Race: Its Origin and Its Destiny by Charles Adiel Lewis Totten. In it, Totten attempted to prove that the genealogy of the British royal line could be traced back to King David. Although Eddy for a time showed some interest in Field-King's efforts, she eventually asked her to stop the research. Not only was the research failing to yield the results Field-King hoped for, but Eddy indicated that these pursuits were contrary to the fundamental teachings of Christian Science regarding the wholly spiritual nature of man.

Beloved Mother:

Your last letter has proved very helpful to me.

I have delayed the answer, because the expert is here, and I wanted to write you all the good I could. Well, with the exception of one name, we are able to trace indisputably, your direct descent without taking Prof. ToltenEditorial Note: Charles Adiel Lewis Totten (1851-1908) wrote a 26-volume series titledOur Race: Its Origin and Its Destiny. Totten had endeavored to trace the British Royal line back to David, King of Israel. for authority. I start for BaltimoreEditorial Note: Baltimore, Maryland Tuesday morning, and in either the Peabody or the Congressional (Smithsonian) Libraries, we will find that name.

I shall be in BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts for the Association meeting, and shall have my work with me. I now think that I shall stop in some retired place (telling no manMatt 8:4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. Mark 7:36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; ) and complete it for whatever use you may deem wisest when you see it. It is too important to the CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. to be made public without your judgment. Divine Principle has guided, and will guide every step of the way. I thought I would tell no one of my visit to Baltimore, as it is such an important quest. To have from the most authentic histories and records through independent research, –(the expert knowing nothing of the purpose of search, nor anything about Prof. Tolten)– the clear, unquestionable proofs of your direct descent from Judah through both Pharez and Jerah, without any admixture of Gentile blood, is, to me, a most remarkable evidence that the hour of revelation has come in the fulness of God's time, for the furtherance of His divine purposes.

Principle has arranged the work here, and raised up devoted students to carry it on, so that I can be away a month, without the Cause being even halted in its progress among this people. Divine Love has wrought a beautiful work here in St. Louis.

It would gladden your loving heart to see it with your eyes. Many hearts, full of most loyal love for the Cause and its Discoverer and Founder, are learning how to "leave all for Christ," and their strong, impersonal, and humble recognition and realization of divine Love is molding the thought of the whole city.

My address in Baltimore will be#1815 St. Paul St.

In connection with thiswork the 5" chapter of ZechariahZech 5:1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. Zech 5:2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. Zech 5:3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it. Zech 5:4 I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof. Zech 5:5 ¶Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth. Zech 5:6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth. Zech 5:7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah. Zech 5:8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof. Zech 5:9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven. Zech 5:10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah? Zech 5:11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base. has seemed a most remarkable prophesy. May I tell it to you?

First, "a flying roll;"– Ancient books were all "rolls"– A flying roll would be a book that rapidly found its way into the hands and hearts of the people. Was there ever a sacred Book that reached so many thousand in so short a time? Then does not Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy do among mortals – "the men of earth"– todayAs Written:to day, just what is said of the "roll" in verses 3 and 4? In verse 6, = "This is an ephah that goeth forth." An ephah is a measure; literally, "what is poured out." The throne of England is the measure of "what is poured out," ie, Israel. Was not Israel poured out, and only Judah and Levi left? The woman in the midst of the ephah, is Queen Victoria, – the mortal, material descendent of David.

David's anointing, the Scripture tells us, was not because of the outward appearance, but because of the heartI Sam 16:6 ¶And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on
Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.
I Sam 16:7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. I Sam 16:8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this. I Sam 16:9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this. I Sam 16:10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these. I Sam 16:11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. I Sam 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
, yet it was interpreted asbeingin answer to the demand for a temporal king.

"The ephah (throne) was closed by the talent (weight) of lead (belief of substance in matter) and then came out two women (the two Marys whose travail brought forth Christianity and Christian Science) lifting up the ephah (Throne of David) between the earth (matter) and heaven", (out of material sense into Spirit). Here it is seen that "divine Love must be seen and felt by mortals." "Whither do these bear the ephah?" "To build it a house (consciousness) in the land of Shinar," i.e.As Written:ie, the land of two views (God and His idea), "and it (The spiritual (true) Throne of David) shall be established, and set there upon its own base," ie, spirit, not matter.

Is this a true interpretation of that prophecy?

In glancing over what I have written I see that you would not glean that the expert now knows why the search for the line from David was instituted. When she came here to work with me, she had to know, in order to arrange what had been gathered, intelligently.

It would seem truly from the records, that you are as true and direct an heir to England's throne as was your cousin, Victoria. But God has never lost sight of David's spiritual anointing and the mighty, invisible sceptre has never departed from Judah, nor the "lawgiverAs Written:law-giver (Christian Science) from between his feet." Truly here is the second appearing of that King – who again proclaims– "To this end was I born, and for this Cause came I into the world, that I should hear witness unto this Truth. Every one that is of the Truth heareth my voice.John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. "

Reverently and lovingly yours,
Julia Field-King.
