I got your truly welcome letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. day before yesterday. I thank you much for it. Have sent it on to Wife. It will do her good. She will know that while you did not get my Telegram asking for help when she was so low, and the enemy threatened to devour her quick, that she was not forgotten. It was a severe test of her Faith in C. S.Editorial Note: Christian Science to be in bed for three weeks with belief of Pneumonia, at an altitude of more than 8000 feet with an almost universal belief in that Country that such cases are nearly always fatal. It did look at one time, as though the enemy would triumph, for I found out after, that a concerted and persistent effort had been and was being made by a clique of Spiritualists in Oakland to prevent the return of Wife to propagate C. Science. Like Demetrius, they saw their craft in dangerActs 19:23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way. Acts 19:24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; Acts 19:25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. Acts 19:26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: Acts 19:27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. Acts 19:28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. Acts 19:29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and
Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
Acts 19:30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. Acts 19:31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. Acts 19:32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. Acts 19:33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people. Acts 19:34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. Acts 19:35 And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? Acts 19:36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. Acts 19:37 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. Acts 19:38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. Acts 19:39 But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. Acts 19:40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. Acts 19:41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
. Before Mrs A– left to study with you some of these mistaken friends warned her against my influence and against C. S. and promised her that if she would only yield to the influence of guides who were waiting to help her, that they would give her marvelous healing power, but if she refused, she would have to suffer & if the first siege As Written: seige of suffering was not enough, she should have another, and from that her recovery would be doubtful. You may judge of the persistent malice when I tell you, that when Miss Brown & Mrs Bell treated Mrs A– they were both affected, as if they had been struck upon the head violently with a club. They said the resistance exceeded anything ever experienced before. But we were enabled to demonstrate the Truth. "No weapon formed against thee shall prosper"Isa 54:17 ¶No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord. When I got to her in Colorado on Sunday morning, she was very low in belief, but night sweats and the violent cough had gone. Head and weakness still very bad. By Thursday morning however she was enabled to take the Train for home. I went with her as far as Ogden. She reached home the following Sunday morning and is now doing well, with a tremendous fight on hand. I feel sure she will have an occasional cheering thought from you. I was startled to hear of Mrs Smith's translation. She was indeed a lovely woman and no ordinary C. Scientist. God's workmen go up higher, but His work goes on. What a bliss to cooperate with God, here and hereafter!

Our Institute still lives and prospers- though last week the straw fell, that for the time being seemed to break the camel's back. All the grace I had, seemed to be exhausted by the domineering and overbearing manner of Miss B– I told her in substance, that unless she controlled that disposition and Temper I must leave, that I could not bear it any longer. At first, she would not talk to me, but went off in high dudgeon, but finally came to, and after a little quiet talk, I think we arrived at a better understanding, and all is now moving on nicely, but I have no guarantee of continuance. I feel myself upon the side of a volcano, that may burst forth at any moment. Nothing but the love of our blessed Truth keeps me in such a position. What makes it so difficult to hold is, the C. Scientists here, almost all of them, have made a law, (I think unconsciously) that no person can work with Miss Brown. I am trying to break that law, for you have not–, as far as my knowledge extends,– a more faithful student and successful scientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist than Miss Brown, None that talks down personality more than she does, and yet I don't As Written: dont know a C Scientist whose personality sticks out so offensively as hers. I don't As Written: dont write thus, to cause you grief, for you know that personality is nothing, and I do too, but at present I haven't As Written: havent got the realization of its nothingness that you have, but I am growing into it, and doubtless this experience will help the growth. We have a little class of 6 this month. I give the first 8 lessons in Recapitulation and Miss B– 4 in the application of the Principles in healing. The work is a luxury to me, the truth becomes daily more luminous and blessed.I do a little demonstrating, so that I may know whereof I affirm. Our Bible Class increases in size and interest, Necessitating the hiring of a Hall for better accommodations. Next Sunday morning I commence a morning service. Bro Day continues the afternoon with much profit to all that hear him.

I have an application to go to OcontoEditorial Note: Oconto, Wisconsin, and dedicate their little church. Can you send me a few suggestions in relation to it.?

This letter is forwarded through Mrs Cross, for I am persuaded that you have not received all my letters, for in one of them I sent $5Editorial Note: $5.00 in 1887 is the equivalent of $165.01 in 2024. towards the church Expenses, that must have been 5 or 6 weeks ago & I have not heard a word from it. Please don't As Written: dont intimate to Miss B– that I have mentioned anything to you about my trouble, for with all her faults I cannot but love her, and that with an unfeigned Christian affection. She sends lots of love to you & hopes to be able to spend a few days in BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts. next Month.

I need only say, I am, as ever,

Your devoted Student
Joseph Adams.
