Editorial Title: Silas J. Sawyer to Hugh McDonald, March 1, 1884
Author: Silas J. Sawyer
Recipient: Hugh McDonald
Date: March 1, 1884
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Silas J. Sawyer on lined paper stamped with a letterhead block, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Editorial Note: Sawyer informs Hugh McDonald that Bradford Sherman, Martha E. Sherman, and Fannie M. Silsbee are all in Boston, studying Christian Science with Mary Baker Eddy. Sawyer says that prior to this, the Shermans and Silsbee had been practicing the teachings of Edward J. Arens, teachings that are a type of mesmerism. Consequently, patients of the Shermans and Silsbee at first appeared to be benefited, but then relapsed. In a letter (not extant) dated February 29, 1884, McDonald apparently wrote of a friend who was interested in receiving Christian Science treatment through prayer from Bradford Sherman. Sawyer advises for the friend to wait until the Shermans return from studying with Eddy, in order that he may receive permanent benefit. Sawyer goes on to say that Eddy has authorized him to teach Christian Science and that he is planning to form a class that will begin on March 10, 1884, and that students will later have the opportunity to study with Eddy herself when she comes to Chicago. Sawyer is also sending to McDonald some sample copies of The Christian Science Journal and asks that McDonald hand them to anyone who would be interested or needs help.
