Editorial Title: Silas J. Sawyer to Mary Baker Eddy, March 13, 1884
Author: Silas J. Sawyer
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: March 13, 1884
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Silas J. Sawyer on his stamped, lined stationery from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Editorial Note: Sawyer reports to Mary Baker Eddy on the class in Christian Science that he is currently teaching. He has four students: Calla Johnson, Mary Hill, Jane M. Dadmun, and Julia Brady. He comments that Julia Brady, whom he previously disliked, has turned out to be an earnest, honest seeker of Truth and that he has high expectations for her. Sawyer is gaining much himself from teaching the class, and would like to continue in teaching, could he become fitted for it. He received a letter from Fannie M. Silsbee and Sawyer hopes that Eddy will persuade Silsbee to practice in Chicago instead of in Milwaukee. He believes she has done a lot of damage to the cause of Christian Science in Milwaukee. Sawyer writes that he has now learned who E. S. Coursen of Chicago is and says that she practices the methods of metaphysical treatment espoused by Edward J. Arens. Sawyer hopes to persuade her to join Mary Baker Eddy's class when Eddy comes to Chicago. (Coursen studied with Eddy in May 1884 in Chicago.) Sawyer has also been informed that C. F. Morrill of Chicago, a student of Bradford Sherman's, is a sincere worker. (Morrill studied with Eddy in Chicago in May 1884.) Sawyer also asks Eddy about Sarah E. Heywood, whom Eddy taught in her class beginning on February 25, 1884. He encloses funds and names for three new Journal subscribers, and he asks Eddy to send more circulars and sample copies of The Christian Science Journal.
