I had planned to come to B–Editorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts and tell you of the work done here, and have your advice in regard to some details, when your request of the 13thEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. was received. I will substitute a letter instead, omitting much that can only be given verbally.
When I arrived here, I found an element of jealousy or self-love, which even you can hardly form an estimate of its extent. We began the organization of the Church, but at one period, every individual ScientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist upon whom you relied, in one way or another withdrew from the project, and we were left with only students of Students, and their friends. We worked on however knowing that if it was God directed all would be well- Some of them returned, and we had or began our public Sunday services. Last sunday the others attended service, which I looked upon as a favorable omen. We had, or have no service tomorrow, because Mrs Stetson does not have time to prepare such an address as she considers good ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science; and we believe it better to have only one or two services per month, if thereby Mrs Stetson can do justice both to the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science and herself. It is requested that we have a Bible Service between the sermon Sundays, and someoneAs Written:some one or more alternate in expounding the Scriptures. For myself I will not undertake such a responsibility, because I believe more mistakes can be made thus, than talking from a single text. I have suggested that a better plan would be to conduct such a service after the Sunday School method; dividing up into classes. My experience is, that when Scientists assemble, and try to explain the Scriptures, they get into controversiesAs Written:controversy's and very little edification is derived.
However. I determined to place the situation before you, and if you have anyoneAs Written:any one here that you know can safely take such a place, I will aid them in all I know how.
I had anticipated this plan - that after the Church organization was well established to request you to send Mr Mason or some other to come and preach for us, in the intervals that Mrs Stetson does not, and thus have a service nearly every Sabbath. Will you please write me your wishes and advice in the matter. Of my part in this enterprise, I can say without boasting, I have labored diligently As Written: dilligently and faithfully. sparing neither my own means or time. Also I am positive that if I had stopped, the whole undertaking would have fallen through. I spent many hours, even days searching for a suitable place to hold services in, and was rewarded at last, for God directed it. We have a very neat little Hall on the cornerAs Written:cor of 5th Ave and 47th St, one flight up. It is considered one of the best locations. In all of this I have never let one thought swerve into personal ruts, even when the actions of some may have called for the severest censure. I know full well that whatever there is of mortal mind, and self in this it will bring the sure penalty- My individual work in perfecting the organization are completed, and now, the carrying on of its object must be shared in alike by all who join. I shall simply bear my part with all, even though they do look to me to take the lead.
