Dear Mrs Eddy.

I receivedAs Written:rec'd your letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. yesterday, I understand that you will teach Mrs Kehro for $100Editorial Note: $100.00 in 1881 is the equivalent of $2,656.57 in 2021.. Now, when can she commence? Perhaps it is too late now, but I will write at once and let her know your terms. Now, Mrs Eddy, for once you have made a mistake about my post of duty. I studied ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science in order to do better work in school, This is my post of duty, and it is second in importance to none but yours. Think of having 50 or 60 children under my care for one year! If I am faithful what a glorious work I can do! You remember when I called at your house to ask about studying, you said "I have never had a teacher," "I should like to introduce ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science into the BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts schools." Now, this is what I am to do. The great question among all interested in schools, is, "Can these children be properly taught if Corporal punishment is abolished?" The three teachers who accidentally found that I had studied ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, are watching me closely to see if I succeed in this respect. I told them Mrs Eddy said I could do more for my scholars in half an hour with ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, than in 25 years without it. One of these teachers said "I would not value $500Editorial Note: $500.00 in 1881 is the equivalent of $13,282.85 in 2021. if it would enable me to control my scholars without punishment." I am determined to succeed, and then I shall make my work known to those of the committee, supervisors and teachers whom I know to be faithful and conscientious. Then you will have a class who will do a noble work for Boston! Parents will all want Christian Scientists to teach their children. There will be such a demand for them that the Normal school graduates will have to study with you before they can teach in the Boston schools. I believe in striking at the root of the evil. If ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science starts with the children, the next generation will be stronger, purer and happier than this. I cannot tell you now all I am doing, but I am satisfied I am doing the work God has given me. Sometime I will call and tell you more. There is much I want to say to you. I want to ask about a Sunday school, These children are getting wrong ideas every Sunday. The sooner they start with right ones, the easier the work will be.

Yours with love,
S. L. Durant.
