Author: Eldridge J. Smith
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: June 10, 1879
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Eldridge J. Smith on printed stationery that identifies him as a "Mechanician and Solicitor of Patents" in Washington, D.C.
Editorial Note: Smith tells Mary Baker Eddy that he has received her letter of June 10, 1879 (not extant). He expresses sympathy for the trials she has been having, quotes Matthew 5:12Matt 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. , and then alludes to Matthew 5:10Matt 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. . He adds that he cannot say for sure how much success she would have if she came to Washington, D.C., but that he sees no reason why it would not be a good field for her work. He discusses the prices for rooms in Washington. He says that he would ordinarily be happy to put her up in his home, but it is small and he currently has a couple of people staying there. He discusses what he would charge Eddy to stay with him.
