Smith left Washington, D.C., in the late summer of 1883, to join her husband in Willamsport, Pennsylvania. Smith's home has been rented out since she left and she is letting the recipient know that she will return in February but expects to keep her home rented out. Smith's husband, Eldridge J. Smith, had several businesses that required him to travel regularly and spend many months away from his home in Washington, D.C. Melinda H. Smith would return home regularly and then go back out and join her husband on the road.
