Dear Mrs. Eddy.

I have so much to tell and ask you that I scarcely know where to begin- Only wish that I could have a personal interview this afternoon, instead of being obliged to confine myself to pen, ink, and paper– First of all, I wish to thank you for your kind letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant.- which I appreciated so much- Several times, I thought of telling you how delighted I was to hear from you, but decided to wait until I had some good case to mention- One little seed sownMatt 13:1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. Matt 13:2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. Matt 13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; Matt 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Matt 13:5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: Matt 13:6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. Matt 13:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: Matt 13:8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. last Summer bore fruit this Winter - I think I told you of a child Christian Science had benefited, how she had been cured of a belief of throat trouble, and of her Mother's reluctance to acknowledge that ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science had wrought the change- I was visiting the family some weeks, and in addition to treating the child, I left "Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy" where it could be read by any member of the family- The Father picked it up one evening, and glanced through it- That glimpse of Truth was sufficient to awaken interest- for in January, when he was stricken with a belief of nervous prostration, he refused to be treated by a physician, saying that Kathleen had been benefited, and that he wished me to treat him, I could see him only once a week- as he visited Washington but one day- Sunday- However, I treated him absently - and sent to BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts for "Science and Health", which he purchased, and promised to read– In two weeks, he gained two or four pounds, (I forget which) and when I last saw him, he was greatly improved- His family took him to Europe- He promised that he would take your book with him- and the latest news is that he continues to improve- The seed fell where I least expected. For several weeks, I had nothing to do, notwithstanding I tried to find those among the poor who would try Christian Science - Nobody wished it- but I improved the time by studying, and one day most unexpectedly, [*]Archival Note: The following text has vertical lines drawn through it. I had a case- The belief was dyspepsia, and chronic constipation- It yielded very quickly One treatment helped the thought of constipation- and the dyspepsia was overcome with little trouble- How happy I felt! Doctors had charge of the case for years- The patient was most enthusiastic- destroyed her medicine, and went home - she lives in the South — declaring she never intended to take any more medicine – Yesterday, I regret to say – I received a note from her telling me that she had a return of constipation- and that she wanted treatment, as she no longer had faith in medicine- I have treated her for fear, and told her that error has no power to re-act - and that with Spirit all is harmony- Of course, I have said this silently- What I wrote was that she had done right not to return to medicine, and that she would soon be all right again- Perhaps, I have done wrong thus to enter into detail, and to trespass upon your time- If I have- pardon me- I have written also to this patient that she had better buy "Science and Health," so she will be able to help herself. At present, I have three cases – one, that of a lady who tried Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. several years ago- but she had such a feeling of dislike for the practitioner that she sent her off- (Fearing that you may think the ScientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist was someoneAs Written:some one you had taught, I mention the fact that she was not one of your pupils) Last week, this lady sent for me, and I am thankful to say she is improving - I notice changes in her, in many ways- From childhood, she has been lame- My great desire now, is that she may be made to walk like other people- Lameness was not the belief that she wished Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. to cure when I was sent for- She had been very ill with Inflammation of the bowels- Indeed, at one time her friends who were watching her, thought she had passed on- but she rallied, and now, I hope she will be led into the light, and be healed not only of this belief of weakness she is struggling with now, but she may be cured of her lameness. The second case is an old lady who to please her daughter, is trying Science for a belief of Cancer- I have seen her twice- The first visit she promised to remove some plasters she was wearing- Yesterday, she told me that she had taken off one, but that she could not take both off at once. TomorrowAs Written:To-morrow, I hope the plasters will be gone— The third case, is the husband of a lady who has experienced benefit from Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. He is an unbeliever, but as I am the daughter of his old chum - he is willing to allow me to treat him- His belief is violent cold- His wife assures me that he takes no medicine- Now, I am anxious to know when your next primary class will be held- [*]Archival Note: End of vertical lines drawn through text. A lady from Erie, PennsylvaniaAs Written:Penna- called upon me last week- She is greatly interested in Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. has read your book, and several others which treat of the subject- This lady is anxious to study- asked me to come to Erie, and teach her- We had a long talk about Science - and when we parted I promised to write, and ask if you would allow her to enter your next class- I told her that if she could possibly gain admission to your class she would be repaid for waiting - I explained my inability to teach- but I tried to help her as well as I knew how, advised her to read nothing about Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. but what "Science and Health" contained, and at my suggestion, she subscribed to the "Journal" Now, will you admit this lady to your next class? Her name is Mrs- Eben- Brewer, and her residence Erie, PennsylvaniaAs Written:Pa- I think that she is earnest in her search for Truth - Another question I have to ask, is if you know of any place kept by a Christian Scientist where a person with the belief of Insanity can be boarded? I tried yesterday to discover such an abiding place through Mr- Ricker and Miss- Gray, but they knew of no place- Cannot you help me to find a home for this patient? I do not know the person thus afflicted, but am acquainted with the person who will have charge of her future while she is in this state of belief, and who is in search of some safe institution to place her friend - She would be willing to try Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. if she was assured that the best care would be taken of her friend- The lady who is insane resides in Kansas- her friend started West for her yesterday- and when she brings her East- which she intends doing soon- she must place her where she can be treated in some way- It is impossible for her to be kept at home — for the lady is so situated that she cannot have her with her- I have stated this case- Can you suggest a Scientist who can take this patient? Last Autumn, when I saw you, you said something about allowing me sometimeAs Written:some time, to go again through a primary course- What a help it would be! I am so anxious to grow as fast as possible- and I think things would be clearer now, than when I first studied- I rely entirely upon your judgment, and whatever you consider best I will do- but I wish you would say for me to come- I should never have dreamed of even the possibility of a second course, had you not mentioned it- Ever since, I have been hoping I might be accorded this privilege– You inquire for Miss- Gray and Mr- Ricker- I called upon Mr- R- and his wife some time ago- but as yet, they have not returned the visit– I imagine, he may be too busy for social duties - I went to see Miss- Gray several times early in the Winter, but she was always occupied with patients - so that each time there was no chance for a talk- I believe, she has a large practice, and I know of a number of cases where she has been most successful —

Please excuse this long letter- and believe me as ever- With warmest love-

Your affectionate student
Virginia T. Johnson -

It almost escaped my mind to forward the enclosed clipping - It was sent me by Mr- MacQueary- I met him last Summer at Cape May- He belongs to the American Society of psychological research - and we had long talks upon psychology- He gave me several reports of the Society to read- I, in return, handed him "Science and Health"- so, I suppose, I am the "New York enthusiast" referred to in the article —
