My beloved teacher

Your precious letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. came to hand last evening. how kind of you to reply. I certainly did not expect it. I thought if you but acknowledged the receipt of mine by sending a newspaper As Written: news paper that would suffice. That you should think any portion of my productionEditorial Note: The January 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal contained a letter by “M. W.” in Columbus, Wis. The published letter appears to be an edited letter from Mattie Williams containing elements of 589.60.015 and this letter. worthy a place in our little Journal surprised me.

I know at the time I wrote a peculiar sweetness so serene stole into my being and it seemed to me you were not far away and God was never more precious – I seemed to have been strengthened and fortified against the shadows which were so soon to fall. Many a bitter tear I shed in the days following. One I loved and trusted seemed to have wandered from the straight and narrow wayMatt 7:13 ¶Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Matt 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. . I knew without were dogs and they who make a lieRev 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. and cause many to fall

May the dear Father help her and others to return. I trust the coming year may be one of victory for the cause of TruthEditorial Note: Christian Science. Certainly Truth can never suffer defeat but its onward march may be retarded and delayed unnecessarily by bungling hands who scatter other than the seeds of Truth. If the sowing and seed is good we need not fear for the harvest.Matt 13:1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. Matt 13:2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. Matt 13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; Matt 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Matt 13:5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: Matt 13:6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. Matt 13:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: Matt 13:8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Matt 13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matt 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? Matt 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. Matt 13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Matt 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. Matt 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: Matt 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Matt 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. Matt 13:17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear and have not heard them. Matt 13:18 ¶Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. Matt 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. Matt 13:20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Matt 13:21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. Matt 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. Matt 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Mark 4:1 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. Mark 4:2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, Mark 4:3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: Mark 4:4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. Mark 4:5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: Mark 4:6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. Mark 4:7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. Mark 4:8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. Mark 4:9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Mark 4:10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. Mark 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: Mark 4:12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. Mark 4:13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? Mark 4:14 ¶The sower soweth the word. Mark 4:15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. Mark 4:16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; Mark 4:17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. Mark 4:18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, Mark 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. Mark 4:20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. Luke 8:4 ¶And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: Luke 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. Luke 8:6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. Luke 8:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. Luke 8:8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Luke 8:9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? Luke 8:10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Luke 8:12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. Luke 8:13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. Luke 8:15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. “God will give the increase”I Cor 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. , I wish you dear Mrs Eddy a “Happy Xmas” and a prosperous “New Year”, I rejoice that you were so helped on that recent Sabbath may many more be added to the already long list of useful days you have spent in the service of our precious SaviorEditorial Note: Jesus Christ. I am now reading Emersons works and am delighted with his thought so far as I am able to comprehend his meaning, Two years ago or even one I could not have appreciated his writings as I do now, “Science and Health”Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. and your instructions have been the means of opening my eyes and elevating my plane of thought so that now and then the harp chords of my soul vibrate and I catch an echo as from the harmony divine. that has thrilled all noble souls in the past and present times. Are we not all truly children of one Father? but “differing as one star differeth from an other in glory”I Cor 15:41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. A Jesus /a Paul or Peter to awaken the dead in belief. I have an extract from a sermon by Dr Thomas of Chicago will copy a few lines. He Says “The lesson taught by Science Was what men are that they shall be. If man is to become immortal, his course is uncertain, considering him a simple creature of evolution but man is not a simple creature of the flesh, He is the offspring of God. This was on the line of progress and an improvement over the telegraph. The time might come when two brains might establish similar communication in different parts of the earth, and men even learn to perform the miracles of Christ. Men could not do the work of today if they did not have something of God in them. They were yet in embryo. and they must be born againJohn 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named
Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
John 3:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? I took my laws and did I not understand the deep stupor that had fallen as an accursed cloud, and the blackness of darkness, And I said yes. “Truly the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not”John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. , And also “If the light within us become darkness how great is that darknessMatt 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. Matt 6:23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! , I Said to one if some have gone out from As Written: frome Mrs Eddie’s Class and were able to at once demonstrate the Truth unmistakably They must have received the Truth through her teachings. I have not accomplished what I desire but, I am expecting as I am faithful in the few thingsMatt 25:14 ¶For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. Matt 25:15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Matt 25:16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. Matt 25:17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. Matt 25:18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money. Matt 25:19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. Matt 25:20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. Matt 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matt 25:22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. Matt 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matt 25:24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: Matt 25:25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. Matt 25:26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Matt 25:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Matt 25:28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. Matt 25:29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. Matt 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. I am at times able to rise above it. And you will not need to take time to write me. You have given me so much that will help me in the future I cannot As Written: can not express my gratitude to you dear Mrs Eddy. I am so thankful for the beautiful works you have given to the world in my day. And as I read the borrowed lights of others. I trace the spirit of all their teachings back to my own mother’s As Written: mother voice. you truly gave birth to the Truths that others are heralding as their own. and no one can be so dull as to accredit your words to others if ever they have read your works “Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy., Beethoven has his own peculiar way of expressing his thought in tone painting Mozart his, Haydn As Written: Hayden his, Mendelssohn As Written: Mendellshon his in his beautiful Songs with Chords and Chopin in his delicate but lightning Waltzes – Cannot As Written: Can not be mistaken to the cultivated ear There is no mistaking the voice of Truth. I have read Mrs Newmans, “Trust in the Infinite” She only repeats the words of Mrs Eddy, and gives us a part of one chapt in Ephesians and Galatians, a few quotations from others Emerson and philosophers And where she does not borrow from you, She says “man has a three fold nature, “Metaphysical nature and spiritual” now I fail to catch her meaning and I do not think she can define herself. I have recently read “Selfhood lost in Godhood”Editorial Note: Selfhood lost in Godhood was a pamphlet by Kate Taylor, who studied with Mary Baker Eddy in September 1884, but left the Christian Science movement in early 1885 after publishing her pamphlet.. I see nothing new in that all that is good is borrowed I also have a little works by Mrs S. S. Grimpke. I find nothing new there and I do not like her term virtue in place of Love. One may possess virtue and Love be a thing unknown. Love is pure and includes virtue, And also one may be moral and yet not religious As Written: relegious but religion As Written: relegion includes strict morality, and includes virtue. and we find Love is the fulfilling of the lawRom 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. Rom 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. for God is LoveI John 4:7-8 I John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Love worketh no ill to any one”Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. , hence we must after rebuking Sin as you say, hate the sin while we love the sinner, and why? because we are all Children of one Father even created in the image and likeness of God. Sin is all that can make us hateful – Jesus ever rebuked sin He told us to resist sin. Resist the devil (error) and he will flee from you”James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. , “Let thee behind me SatanLuke 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Luke 4:2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. Luke 4:3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Luke 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. Luke 4:6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. Luke 4:7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Luke 4:9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: Luke 4:10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: Luke 4:11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Luke 4:12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Luke 4:13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. , and what a rebuke He gave poor Peter when He even called him SatanMatt 16:21 ¶From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Matt 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. Matt 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mark 8:32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. Mark 8:33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. Peter simply in his sympathy expressed a lie against Truth – “Ye Pharisees hypocrites how can ye escape the damnation of HellMatt 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? ”. Sounds pretty harsh if there is no condemnation no hell “Ye can not serve God and Mammon”Matt 6:24 ¶No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and
mammon.
Luke 16:13 ¶No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and
mammon.
“And whosoever will follow me must deny himself and take up his cross”Mark 8:34 ¶And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. . if there are no crosses, no burdens to bear, no errors to meet, what a waste of time, and words from our blessed MasterEditorial Note: Jesus Christ who all conceded As Written: concedet spake as never man did before or sinceJohn 7:45 ¶Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? John 7:46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. . On the 4th day of November I wrote a little article on the Trinity. And I like others gleaned many and all my best thoughts from your As Written: you field. though I did not copy one word from book or Bible. I only wrote as the thoughts came crowding through the avenue of my thought I wrote and never once stopped till the whole was finished and I have never made one correction. I will copy and send it to you with this letter. you have laid the foundation others may build.I Cor 3:10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. but the material shows the mine from whence it has been quarried. And I say you are blessed because God has seen fit to choose you as the transparency through which to reflect His own glorious Truth

I love you because you love Christ. And through your blessed teachings Truth has been lifted up and I am one who has been attracted by its power and glory – And herein is the truth verified “If I (Truth) be lifted up will draw all men unto me”John 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. – I do not worship other Gods than the true God and to Him shall all the glory and honor be ascribed As Written: asscribed World without end,

I know at the time I wrote a peculiar sweetness so serene stole into my being and it seemed to me you were not far away and God was never more precious – I seemed to have been strengthened and fortified against the shadows which were so soon to fall. “God will give the increase”I Cor 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. , I wish you dear Mrs Eddy a “Happy Xmas” and a prosperous “New Year”, I rejoice that you were so helped on that recent Sabbath may many more be added to the already long list of useful days you have to spent in the service of our precious SaviorEditorial Note: Jesus Christ.
