Accession: 654.69.006
Editorial Title: James Piper Cadman to Mary Baker Eddy, January 7, 1884
Author: James Piper Cadman
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Annotator: Unknown  Mary Baker Eddy
Date: January 7, 1884
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by James Piper Cadman on his lined printed stationery as General Agent for the People's Cyclopedia, from Chicago, Illinois, with a notation in unknown handwriting and another notation by Mary Baker Eddy.
Archival Note: The notations by an unknown individual and by Mary Baker Eddy have also been assigned the accession number L17550.
Editorial Note: Cadman asks Mary Baker Eddy what she would charge him for a copy of her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, noting that he is in the bookselling business. He goes on to tell Eddy that he was healed of indigestion through Christian Science treatment through prayer from Bradford Sherman. He asks Eddy for her terms in teaching Christian Science healing, and what mental and physical attributes are required of the student. Cadman realizes that there could be failures in the practice of Christian Science, not because of any defect in the Science itself, but because a practitioner may not have the requisite attributes for successful healing. He hopes to hear from Eddy soon. A notation in unknown handwriting on the letter reads: "Conditions required. Convincing evidence that you are a Christian, Mentally and physically, or desire to become such"

Dear Madam

What will you charge me for a copy of your work “Science & Health”Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures I am in the bookselling business as you see from my card.

I was cured of a very serious & longstanding attack of indigestion by one of the practitioners of your school here in Chicago, Dr.Editorial Note: Bradford Sherman did not have a medical degree, but in the nineteenth century, persons engaged in various “healing arts” were often called “doctor.” Sherman, though I understand he received his instructions from one of your pupils & not from your College direct.

What are your terms for teaching your method of healingEditorial Note: Christian Science & what are the conditions of mind & body required in your pupils in order to successful practice of the treatment

I feel confident that a person may learn your method of treatment & yet fail to use it successfully himself not because of a defect in the system but by reason of some mental and physical defect in the pupil.

Hoping to hear from you soon I am

Yours Very Respectfully
Jas. P. Cadman
