Archival Note: See L17610Click link to view L17610 document in new window for an annotated transcription of this letter. A notation on the letter in the handwriting of Calvin A. Frye indicates that Gould's questions about orthodox Christian doctrines will be answered in The Christian Science Journal. But, no specific answers to Gould's questions have been located in issues of the Journal from that time period.
Editorial Note: Gould writes to Mary Baker Eddy that she first became aware of Christian Science through hearing of a remarkable cure brought about through the Christian Science practice of Bradford Sherman. Gould herself was subsequently benefited by receiving Christian Science treatment through prayer from Sherman. However, Gould is having some doubts. While she agrees with some of the premises of Christian Science, she wants to retain some traditional orthodox Christian doctrines and has been assured by Christian Scientists Emily S. Coursen (with whom Gould studied) and Charles F. Morrill that she is free to retain these. However, Gould does not see how it is possible to do that and still be a Christian Scientist. She would like to meet Eddy and have her help in better understanding Christian Science.
