case

A week or more ago I wrote youEditorial Note: This letter is not extant., asking a mental cure of my cousin, Elmer Gorton, (age 18) of 467 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. I described his state, telling how his leg had shriveled As Written: shrivelled and decayed from lack of blood circulation, or the stoppage of an artery.
No good resulted from my letter, and all interested, as well as myself, are anxious to know the reasons, whether it is because you have not received my letter, or perchance it is an impossible case. His left leg has not yet been amputated, as the mortification, or decaying part appears to be still extending upward toward the thigh. He is now very weak and nervous, having been confined to his bed four or five weeks; and the doctor or doctors are doubtful of saving even his life. I am told that the upper part of the leg has recently become inflamed, has burst at one point, out of which oozes a very malodorous fluid in large quantities daily. As I told you in the previous letter, the greater part of the leg is dead, black, and decomposing.
If it is in your power to save his life, even without his leg, please do so. If the latter is impossible, - that is, if his leg must be amputated, please write me to that effect. Enclosed is stamp. I should also like to know why (so far as you may be pleased to state), a case of this kind may not be treated metaphysically. “Science and Health”Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy abounds in various bold statements to the effect that we must not admit any disease, condition, or circumstance to be beyond the control of mind.
As I remarked before, you shall be well compensated for whatever you do in the case for his recovery.
Please give this you immediate attention, as it is urgent, and delay may prove disastrous in more than one way.
