Editorial Note: Payne is responding to a letter dated October 11, 1883, (not extant) that she received
from Mary Baker Eddy. Payne and her husband, William Payne, had ordered The Christian Science Journal and some pamphlets from Eddy, and Eddy explained in her letter why the Paynes had
not received them as it seems that the money sent was lost. But Eddy has now sent
a copy of the Journal and the Paynes have read it with much interest. A friend had given them a copy of
the Journal previously, and they found much that was commendable in it. Payne writes that she
and her husband have been interested in the subject of healing for many years, as
they have had a number of medical problems. She says that for 23 years now they have
relied on God for healing and been helped in times of sickness. Now they would like
to understand more so that they can help others as well.
