Mrs. Dr Eddy.
Dear Madam.

It has been nearly one year since I knew of your existence and labors and but a short time since the first volume of your book “Science and Health” was placed into my hands by a friend As Written: frind . I am deeply interested in your work. I have been searching for 12 years for the remedy you are now holding out to suffering humanity. I have entertained a hope of going to you for healing and instruction ever since I have learned of your scienceEditorial Note: Christian Science but owing to circumstances have not been able to do so as my Husband lost all his property within a short period owing to an unsuccessful business transaction. My only hope for healing is in and by your methods, Christ the Healer, but of course without teaching or instruction cannot comprehend or apply it to my own individual case. I believe my disease to be the result of fear My health has not been good for 15 years. I know that sickness is the result of sin. I do not believe in living in a sick body and I can only compare myself as one bound with fetters struggling to free myself, yet powerless to do so. I gave up drug medication 12 years since have never resorted to them but once and that merely to gratify my friends. After I gave up drug medication I went to a Water Cure at Dansville N.YEditorial Note: The Jackson Sanatorium, located at Dansville, New York, was a prominent health resort featuring the “water cure” or hydropathy. Hydropathy advocated copious use of pure water as a healing agent. spent one year there, was a strict GrahamiteEditorial Note: This is a reference to dietetic and health practices promoted by Sylvester Graham (1794-1851), who advocated frequent bathing, abstaining from meat and alcohol, and eating foods made of whole grain. but did not recover. Then the Lord led me to Corning N.Y where I received spiritual food for soul and body and know that Dr IngersollEditorial Note: This is likely Dr. Andrew J. Ingersoll, proprietor of the "Pinewood Water Cure" sanatorium in Knoxville, New York, and author of a book, In Health, published in 1876. has done much for me by his teachings which agree somewhat with your own. Dr IEditorial Note: This is likely Dr. Andrew J. Ingersoll. – tells me the reason I have not recovered is that I have submitted to the Lord but have not fully yielded. I have been endeavoring to do so but for some reason cannot. I have such an exhausted feeling much of the time and for three years have had a roaring or seething in my head together with a great deal of fullness As Written: fulness , forgetfulness, and inability to keep my mind upon one subject long at a time. I have a lump or tumor, inwardly, in my right side as the result of being treated for Uterine disease. this made its appearance about five years since As Written: sinc . I was very much troubled about this but was enabled to leave it with the Lord, which relieved my mind greatly.

I met a Mrs. Smith the early part of this month at a friends in WilliamsportEditorial Note: Williamsport, Pennsylvania who has been a Patient of yours and whom I have since learned expects to become a pupil of yours this Summer. I did not have time to learn any particulars regarding your methods or as she was in a hurry. and I expected to meet her again before my return home. but failed to do so.

What are your terms? and can I be treated at my own home Please let me hear from you that I may know what can be done for me? I am in my fortieth year. It is only my trust in the Lord that keeps up my strength.

Hoping I may hear from you at your earliest convenience I remain
