Never before have I felt in such full measure the great import of the glad tidings "On earth peace, good will toward menLuke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. " as when an extra edition announced peace concluded between Japan and Russia. Instantly my heart went out in deepest gratitude to you, dear Leader, for your prayers have made the result possible, when to mortal sense rupture seemed inevitable.
If you had not given to the world Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, teaching that the God of nations is the one perfect Mind, Intelligence, Love that rules and guides them, peace would not have been concluded now.
Nor are these idle words. I was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia, and ever since the beginning of hostilitiesEditorial Note: The Russo-Japanese War took place between February 8, 1904, and September 5, 1905. Russia and Japan went to war due to competing imperial ambitions over land in Northeast China and the Korean peninsula., I have tried to view the situation from a Christian Science standpoint. Nevertheless with every Russian reverse the mental struggle within myself was very severe, for I love the Russian people dearly.-
When you asked us to pray for the conclusion of peaceEditorial Note: The June 17, 1905 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel included a letter, "To My Church," from Mary Baker Eddy asking Christian Scientists to pray for peace in the war between Russia and Japan. Two weeks later, in the July 1 issue, another letter from Eddy was published, "'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord,'" asking Christian Scientists to cease their specific prayers for peace. She explained her thoughts further in the July 22 issue: "Mrs. Eddy's Requests." On August 9, Russian and Japanese representatives came together in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for a peace conference mediated by Theodore Roosevelt. An armistice was signed on September 5, 1905., a sense of utter inability to do so seemed to take hold of me. But from experience I have learned to obey you and I did then. Great peace came to me in that hour, for I could see Russians and Japanese alike as God's children, perfect and eternal, and this conviction ruled out all prejudice and let Love reign supreme.
'There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. '
Rulers of nations, emperors and plenipotentiaries will have the credit from the world for what has been done. Will many think of you? Yes, the heart of every loyal Christian Scientist will go out to you in loving gratitude for what you have done and are doing for mankind.
The world's reward you need not, God has blessed you.
