Editorial Title: Science of Mental Healing
Author: Mary Baker Eddy
Scribe: Calvin A. Frye
Annotator: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: January 18, 1885
Manuscript Description: This sermon was handwritten on lined paper by Calvin A. Frye with edits by Mary Baker Eddy.
Editorial Note: Although it is labeled as an extract, this appears to be the entire sermon. It was given by Eddy at Hawthorne Hall. A report in The Christian Science Journal of February 1885 observed, "a man who went into Hawthorne Hall on crutches, but the power of the Truth as she gave it utterance, set him free from his infirmities, and he went home without his crutches!" This same issue of the Journal also included an extract of this sermon and the full text was later published by Eddy in Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, pp. 171-176.

Science of Mental Healing.

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till the whole was leavened. Matt 13:33 ¶Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. Matt. 13. 33.

Few people at present know aught of the science of mental healing, and so many are obtruding their ignorance, or false knowledge on the public in the name of science it behooves all clad in its shining mail to keep bright their armor, invincible their demonstration , and modest their claims and their lives steadfast in Truth. Dispensing the Word charitably but separating the tares and the wheat let us declare the positive and negative of metaphysical science, what it is, and what it is not; intrepid, self-oblivious Protestants in a higher sense than was ever done before, to meet and defeat the claims of sense and sin regardless of the bans or clans pouring in their fire upon us; while white winged charity brooding over all would cover with her soft feathers the veriestEditorial Note: Adjective: Used to emphasize the degree to which a description applies to someone or something. sinner.

Then shall the angel of His presence, holding the little bookRev 10:2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth, Rev 10:8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. Rev 10:9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. Rev 10:10 And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter. spoken of in the Apocalypse, with right foot on the sea and left foot on the earth measure the temple of our God, and the altar, and them that worship thereon. For Truth and Life have come near the understanding and touched the waters of unconscious mortal thought with the rightful reign of science and the body, the temple upon which that thought rests with a bane or a benediction, must be made the temple of Truth. The divine and unerring Mind measures man, until the three measures be accomplished, and he arrives at the fullness of the stature; for the Lord God omnipotent reignethRev 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. .

Science is divine it is neither of human origin nor direction: that which is termed natural science, the evidences whereof the five personal senses take in, is presents but a finite, feeble sense of the infinite law of God, which law is written on the hearts, received through the affectionsEditorial Note: Eddys use of the word affections here and elsewhere in her writings, shows the influence of Puritan theologian Jonathan Edwards. Biographer Stephen Gottschalk comments:[Edwards]developed and passed on to Eddys religious mentors a rich theology of the religious affections the new disposition of the heart awakened through the spiritual sense that only Gods grace and love could effect. The renewal of religion, Edwards and his followers maintained, begins with a change in the inner life. Once spiritual sense is touched and activated, he explained, men get new affections a new sense of the excellency of God and his creation that results in a spiritual awakening not otherwise to be had.Rolling Away the Stone, pp. 59, 60., spiritually understood and demonstrated in our lives. This law of God is the science of Mental Healing; spiritually discerned understood and obeyed. .

Science is absolute, final, eternal: a royal road to harmony, it voices law with more than regal majesty; an autocrat from an atom to immensity, the universal alchemy whose touch turns to gold. Human reason bows before it, at first it quarrels with it, denies it and defies it, then beholding its principle and the majesty of its reign, saith, Thy kingdom come on earth as in heaven.Matt 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Mental science and the five personal senses are at war and peace can only be declared on the side of immutable right, the health, holiness and immortality of man. To gain this scientific result the first and fundamental rule of this science must be understood and adhered to. Namely, the oft repeated declaration in Scriptures that God is good, hence good is omnipotent and omnipresent. The Lord God omnipotent reignethRev 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Rev. “If the Lord be God follow Him”I Kings 18:21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 1 Kings 18.21. “Unto thee it was shewed that thou mightest know that the Lord He is God; there is none beside him.”Deut 4:35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him. Deut.4.35. For if it be of God ye cannot overthrow itActs 5:39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. Acts 5.39. Jesus declared the reign of divine Science and his Messianic mission in this Go and show John again those the things ye see and hear, the blind receive their sight the lame walk , the lepers are cleansed the deaf hearMatt 11:2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, Matt 11:3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? Matt 11:4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: Matt 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. Luke 7:19 ¶And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? Luke 7:20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? Luke 7:21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Luke 7:22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. Editorial Note: See also Mary Baker Eddy, SH 131:29-31 SH 132:1-9 . A position held by many mainstream New Testament scholars is that the historical Jesus was likely a Jewish apocalyptic prophet who proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of God. And that Jesus would have seen his healing works as evidence of this reign of God beginning to break into human life and destroying the works of Satan sin, disease, and death. See Dale Allison, Jesus of Nazareth: Millenarian Prophet; Bart D. Ehrman, Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Millennium; and Paula Frederiksen, Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews: A Jewish Life and the Emergence of Christianity. etc. .

Ancient and modern philosophy, human reason or man's theorems misstate mental science its Principle and practice. The most enlightened material senses sees nothing but a law of matter when it is a law of Mind, from this basis of evidence the body can affect the mind but the eye cannot see how Mind affects the body. Who hath ever learned of the schools that there is but one Mind, and this one is God who healeth all our sicknesses and sins? Who has ever learned from the schools, pagan philosophy or scholastic theology that science is the law of Mind and not of matter, and this law has no relation to or recognition of matter! Mind is its own great cause and effect, Mind is God, omnipotent and omnipresent. What then of an opposite so-called science that saith man is both matter and mind and his mind is in matter Can the infinite be within the finite or can man resist the All and Only does an evil mind exist without space to occupy power to act or vanity to pretend it is man. If God is Mind and filleth all space, is everywhere, matter is nowhere and sin obsolete

If Mind, God, is all power and presence it man is not met by another power and presence that obstructing his intelligence pains, fetters, and befools him making his body akin to his mind. The perfection of man and the universe are intact. Whence then is something beside Him which not the counterpart but the counterfeit of his Creator? Not from Him and yet he made allEditorial Note: See SH 311:4 God is Mind: all that Mind, God, is, or hath made, is good, and He made all. Hence evil is not made and is not real.. not the man of his creating for he made man in his own likeness. Whence then is the atom or molecule called matter? Hath attraction and cohesion formed it? But what are these forces, laws of matter or laws of Mind? The Scriptures hath declared them laws of Mind, and forces of His thoughts, consolidating into myriad manifestations and identities all forms of beauty and good and these forms from an atom to the infinite from the tiniest dust of night glowing insect up to man reflect the one Life Truth and Love.

For matter to be matter, it must have been self-created. Mind hath no more power to evolve or to create matter any more than good of to produce evil. Matter is a misstatement of Mind a lie claiming to talk and disclaim against Truth of serpent in the first instance and a subtlety in the next death over life, a supposed idolatry having other gods, evil having power and presence over omnipotence and omnipresence If mortal foot treads on forces these forces defy mortal reason and strength when misnamed matter and man to bows the knee to Belial , error, misnamed mind. Matter was created as the opposite of or by the opposite of itself of Mind and science reveals this impossibleAs Written:impossibile since nothing but the immutable law of Mind is divine order and its phenomena in harmony with it . Whatever is an inward misconception of the outward, a material sense of Mind a or a species of the opposite species, is error, and you may call it matter or mortal mind but you will have to learn at last it is neither one since Spirit and its spiritual forms of thought are the only realities of being

Now let us have a clearing up of abstractions, let us come into His presence and bow before Him, let us praise his name for he is greatly to be adored who removeth all our iniquities and healeth all our diseases. Let us attach our sense of science to what touches the religious sentiment with awe and conviction let us open our hearts, affectionsEditorial Note: Eddys use of the word “affections” here and elsewhere in her writings, shows the influence of Puritan theologian Jonathan Edwards. Biographer Stephen Gottschalk comments: [Edwards] developed and passed on to Eddys religious mentors a rich theology of the religious affections the new disposition of the heart awakened through the spiritual sense that only Gods grace and love could effect. The science of Mental healing is only at home in the heart, it adorns human character with the reflection of the divine. it bringeth into our common life the gentle amenities and sweet amends for absent heaven that tell of self-forgetfulness, meekness, charity. Now have we the actual of the science of mental healing, the little leaven that leavens the whole lumpI Cor 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Gal 5:9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. Editorial Note: See also SH 329:5 A little leaven leavens the whole lump. Mis 39:16-20 Unlike the M. D.'s, Christian Scientists are not afraid to take their own medicine, for this medicine is divine Mind; and from this saving, exhaustless source they intend to fill the human mind with enough of the leaven of Truth to leaven the whole lump. Mis 166:22-31 Like the leaven that a certain woman hid in three measures of meal, the Science of God and the spiritual idea, named in this century Christian Science, is leavening the lump of human thought, until the whole shall be leavened and all materialism disappear. This action of the divine energy, even if not acknowledged, has come to be seen as diffusing richest blessings. This spiritual idea, or Christ, entered into the minutiae of the life of the personal Jesus. It made him an honest man, a good carpenter, and a good man, before it could make him the glorified. My 59:4-12 When you told us that the truth you expounded was the little leaven that should leaven the whole lump, we thought this might be true in some far distant day beyond our mortal vision. It was above conception that in less than forty years a new system of faith and worship, as well as of healing, should number its adherents by the hundreds of thousands and its tenets be accepted wholly or in part by nearly every religious and scientific body in the civilized world., that giveth health to mind and body, that casts out devils, error, and heals all manner of diseases. This natural effect of mental science personal sense incapable of comprehending it, may seem supernatural But science is the method of God that always declares him, in from the least to the greatest--in the eternal rhythmAs Written:rythm of creation Now have we science reaching beyond the so-calledAs Written:socalled granule of matter to explains how an atom of infinite thought // attracts and makes goodness and this Mind revealing itself in atoms of thought to finite sense which is first misnamed matter next mortal sense and the revelation a law of matter. Now have we Mind constituting all things and the essence and aroma of good flavoring all substance life and intelligence. Above ArcturusEditorial Note: Arcturus is one of the brightest stars in the sky and can be seen from both hemispheres. It is the brightest star in the Bootes constellation. and his sons broader than the universe and higher than the heavens of your astronomy is the science of mental healing.

Adjective: Used to emphasize the degree to which a description applies to someone or something. Eddys use of the word affections here and elsewhere in her writings, shows the influence of Puritan theologian Jonathan Edwards. 59, 60. See also Mary Baker Eddy, SH 131:29-31 SH 132:1-9 . See SH 311:4 God is Mind: all that Mind, God, is, or hath made, is good, and He made all. Hence evil is not made and is not real. D.'s, Christian Scientists are not afraid to take their own medicine, for this medicine is divine Mind; and from this saving, exhaustless source they intend to fill the human mind with enough of the leaven of Truth to leaven the whole lump.
