Isaiah As Written: Isaih 9th—6thIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

For unto us a child is bornIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Over 1800 years ago the advent of a babe stamped a new impress on history Little dreamed the Emperor enthroned in his gorgeous palace upon the Capitoline hill that a babe slumbering in a manger in the obscure hamlet of Bethlehem a remote province of AsyriaEditorial Note: Assyria was a kingdom of Northern Mesopotamia, centered on the Tigris River, and located in what is now northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey, northeastern Syria, and some of northwestern Iran. was to establish an empire before which the power of the Caesars As Written: Ceasars must dwindle in insignificance.

When the child Jesus was born all the nations known of that period were in subjection to the government of Rome Around the Mediterranean As Written: Mediterraneon shores were clustered the thronged provinces and majestic cities that gave Rome the palm of dynasties. the Atlantic Ocean was an unexplored Sea, the Indies had but a fabulous existence. Rome was then the world and Caesar As Written: Ceasar was the governor of Rome, he could do what he pleased with the property the liberty and lives of over three hundred millions of people comprising the Roman Empire. Such power no mortal ever swayed before such power no mortal will ever sway again.X The prophetEditorial Note: Isaiah saith "For unto us a child is bornIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. " 1st Let us consider what gave this declaration its especial interest, 2nd What was that star seen in the east that went before them till it came and stood over where the young child wasMatt 2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. .

Millions of children were born before the babe of Bethlehem, but they were not heralded by angels or tokens in the heavens History furnishes the fact, that the meek Nazarene As Written: Nazareen was the most conspicuous character that ever trod the globe

Uneducated, he put to flight the arrogant Rabbis, overthrew the proudest systems of philosophy ancient and modern; warrior, king and philosopher went down before him, and his teachings and demonstrations are destined to take Christianity As Written: christianity back to its primitive definitions. But turn we from the material to the spiritual history of the babe, whose infant wailings blent with the bleating of the goat and lowing of the kineEditorial Note: Kine refers to a group of cows. The narrative of the birth of Jesus Christ, as given in the Gospel of Luke, has the baby Jesus laid "in a manger; because there was no room for them in the innLuke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. "., briefly to examine that history before the hour of its gloom and glory

Well might Isaiah As Written: Isaih sing—for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderfull, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. That Hebrew MelodistEditorial Note: Isaiah discerned just cause for clapping hands, when a mighty Truth welling up from the Infinite presented itself to mortal sense, and that sense kissed it and called it a babe And did not that wise seerEditorial Note: Isaiah forecast the destiny of Truth when he said the government shall be upon its shoulder; it shall be found a marvelous guide, an Omnipotent power, an imperishable Principle.

But remember the Hebrew bardEditorial Note: Isaiah in his grand epic referred As Written: refered not to the little bunch of flesh, phosphate As Written: phosphat and linen lying in a crib, but to the advent of the Spiritual idea namely that Life is evolved of Spirit and man begotten of Principle not person. That a perfect Mind evolves a perfect man a true idea of God —that Mind neither originates from nor results in materiality. that Soul never cribbed As Written: cribed with beasts, Spirit never blent with matter, Soul is untouched by evil passions and mortality As Written: nortality. . X Retaining his conscious spiritual existence and entity, the mind of Jesus could best interpret mind its native domain . Hence his control over matter, or material belief, —even the error called mortal man.

The life of Jesus was identical with Truth and Love, hence it was the Life that is God. he demonstrated Spirit free from all fetters, Love unselfish and universal, the healing power of Truth, and Life immortal, Soul the Substance of man, and body the idea of Soul. X He separated a material from a Spiritual sense of religion, establish ed in divine science the reality and continuance of all things spiritual, and the nothingness of material things. To him Spirit was the only Substance; the permanent and eternal side of things were their Truth the holy thoughts that formed them gave them birth named them, and announced them ideas of God , We must be born againJohn 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. to understand the Metaphysics of our Master, born of the Spirit and not of the flesh. Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. .

Great epochs begin with the birth of new ideas . As our idea of God grows more impersonal we shall love Him more and love Truth for Truth's sake this will imbue us with a more divine and less human affection and purpose; this spiritual conception will give birth to a higher individuality, when man becomes a babe in Christ, born meekly by reason of his surroundings in the manger of worldliness sin, and self. X When Columbus gave birth to his thoughts of the globe, when Thomas Jefferson uttered the impregnable principle of liberty and another declared the supremacy of Spirit its power to heal the sick and destroy all error the fortunes of the race were gradually turned into a higher channel by the mild pressure of Truth. It is the great conceptions of meek and noiseless birth, not the tumultuous effervescence As Written: effervessence that change the existing state of things and gently force man onward. The silent light, cheering the cot, gilding the palace, gleaming through the lattice, glinting upon the church dome, glancing into the dungeon, gliding into the sick room, brightening the flower, beautifying the landscape, blessing the world, is not egotistical; but the loud whirlwind, is the sign and product of disunion and weakness, passes on and is forgotten. The most notable period of the ages was that when a Galilean As Written: Gallean peasant told to wondering ears, his simple sense of Truth how it healed the sick , reformed the sinner and despoiled the grave of its victory I Cor 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

He trusted his words to the providence of God, but in no fact seems the man of Galilee greater than in his serene sense of the immortality of what he uttered, and demonstrated. Said he, "heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass awayMatt 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Mark 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. " what a calm confidence was that in the superior permanence of Mind over matter. If we study life aright we shall never sneer at abstractions as visionary or unreal, if false they are unsubstantial as the coruscations As Written: corruscations in the northern As Written: northen sky, but if true they are permanent, impregnable as Principle resistless as right X In Mary's meek conception of God's man the Judean shepherds saw the ever-present As Written: everpresent good the ImmanuelAs Written: Imanuel, , the God with man, and the virgin mother saw her own son; her own thought embodied in its purity The vision of Mary rose above the maternal instinct of the flesh and gave place to prophecy— mutely she pondered his earthly fate She was not blind to the necessities of his God-mission on earth —that the divine must touch the human and the human would struggle with the divine. X Conscious in part of the power of Truth and Love also the supremacy of Spirit over matter aware that her son was the idea and representative of divine Science Mary said to him at the marriage feastJohn 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: John 2:2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. John 2:3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. John 2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. John 2:5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. John 2:6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. John 2:7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. John 2:8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. John 2:9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, John 2:10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. John 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. , "they have no wine" in other words this wedding As Written: weding is uninspired and he replied "woman (how significant that word to his Mother!) Mine hour is not yet come" Modest of his understanding Jesus had not then full confidence in his power to illustrate the great facts of Spirit , but his mother's of immaculate proof of the divine power, reassured her and she urged this exhibition on on her son—she would have him demonstrate mind causal, able to present the form and character of a thought tangibly to the senses Then she said unto the servants "whatever he saith unto you do it" And Jesus turned the water into wine spiritually and literally but remember the senses alone saw wine God, Spirit, never made wine But changes mortal thought, motive and act through inspiration, not intoxication X The guests at Galilee knew that Mind gave to marriage the inspiration of Soul not sense The Spiritual origin of Jesus conferred As Written: confered upon him above all others a clear understanding of the Omnipotence of Spirit and the nothingness of matter yea the undivided realm and reign of Spirit The Scriptures declare that Jesus' demonstration at the marriage, "manifested forth his glory and hisJohn 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. disciples As Written: deciples believed on himJohn 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. "

But would it be said of Christianity As Written: christianity todayAs Written:to day predicated of such proof—that it manifests forth His glory? Until the divine Principle and Science of this transforming power is Apprehended As Written: appehended it cannot present the proof of divine power

The all-engrossing care for our bodies – the all-absorbing selfishness and sensualism entrenched within every form of society, betrays the greatest ignorance of what constitutes happiness and the inspiration of Life It was the holy aim, and pure thought that made man perfect that laid the foundation in the mind of Mary which outlined the character of Jesus The motive of such a mind is crowned its birthright of purity blesses, involuntarily, and universally; it has not the power to harm, but to help mankind.

The purity of his origin reproduced itself in the aims the affections and achievements of the man Jesus, in him Divine Science had a fit representative,

Man begotten of Spirit reflects God, and the higher qualities instincts and possibilities of Mind are born of Spirit not of the flesh X In the original texts the word son implied a variety of descents,As Written: decents, the child a year old was termed the son of a year etc In the Hebrew son did not indicate a human or Divine Father Jesus was a man and God his Father in the same sense that He is ours and the Principle of being The mighty difference between the Nazarene,As Written: Nazareen, and a Nero, obtained in their different origins; the bloody emperor was a type of sin and sensualism, the meek and mighty Nazarene As Written: Nazareen a type of purity Truth and Love parents. The parents of Nero out of their own qualities of thought, constituted a monster rather than a man; the one earthly parent of Jesus (for he had but one) engraved upon her son the impress of her thoughts allied to God the father of all goodness and blessedness X From the parable of the husbandmanMatt 21:33 ¶Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: Matt 21:34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. Matt 21:35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Matt 21:36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. Matt 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. Matt 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. Matt 21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. Matt 21:40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? Matt 21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. Matt 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Matt 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Matt 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Matt 21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them. Matt 21:46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet. Mark 12:1 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winevat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. Mark 12:2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. Mark 12:3 And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty. Mark 12:4 And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled. Mark 12:5 And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some. Mark 12:6 Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son. Mark 12:7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours. Mark 12:8 And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. Mark 12:9 What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. Mark 12:10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: Mark 12:11 This was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Mark 12:12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way. Luke 20:9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. Luke 20:10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. Luke 20:11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. Luke 20:12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. Luke 20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. Luke 20:14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. Luke 20:15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? Luke 20:16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. Luke 20:17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? Luke 20:18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Luke 20:19 ¶And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. we learn how the age receives a new idea, saying "this is the heir come let us kill him and the inheritance shall be oursLuke 20:14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. ". Some individuals, in all ages, have tried to stop the advancing footsteps they are unwilling to follow, they would hold perpetual guard at the threshold of history to keep back the angels visitant not having on an old-time garment. And to abate their moral power they would even rob the character of the reformer who beareth the glad tidings which shall be to all peopleLuke 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. , shall uproot all clans, dynasties, civil and religious despotisms. If the Spiritual tendency of the Metaphysics of Jesus is found uprooting materialism and personal gods (as certainly it is) it must have enemies, that will deny its divinity and assail its exponent. The highest moralist on the globe cannot escape this But they do it only to silence the glorious influence and stop the march of a new idea—But the shepherds of Israel shall shout "for unto us a child is born and his name shall be called wonderfulIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. X The thunders of Sinai As Written: sinai never uttered their voices that a medical censor As Written: sensor shall decide what are the exact rights of a man to benefit his race. Must it be said that in these United States where the statue of our Lincoln layeth its hand in benediction on the oppressed, that laws have been enacted in a majority of the statesEditorial Note: In the 1870s, a number of states enacted some form of medical licensure laws to limit the practice of medicine to physicians licensed by a state board. Eddy is likely referring to those laws in relation to their impact on the practice of Christian Science., prohibiting any other medical practice than Materia Medica. But civil or religious despotism can never annul the divine decree. And these signs shall follow them that believe they shall lay their hands on the sick and they shall recover. Human law cannot forever trample upon the rights of man. God hath said it, and it echoes along corridors of time that Truth shall redeem the earth from under the curse of error; and materia medica is not Truth we know from experience. X Dr. James Johnson of London surgeon extraordinary to the King says if there was not a single Physician, Surgeon, Apothecary man-midwife, chemist, or druggist there would be less sickness and less mortality . Sir John Forbes fellow of the Royal College of physicians, London, says—no therapeutic As Written: theraputic agents ever yet promulgated, is true or can be adopted as a safe guidance in practice Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse Professor in Harvard University, says, I am sick of learned quackery. Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes says, if the whole Materia Medica could be sunk to the bottom of the sea it would be all the better for mankind and all the worse for the fishes.

Human law that we have seen capable of almost every injustice may for a short period longer hedge about and support the speculative myth called Materia Medica, that originated with Pagan priests and heathen deities; but the four thousand years history of medicine is drawing to a close and when it is finally buried in oblivion mankind will be emancipated from one of the most abject slaveries that ever infested the globe.

The legislative acts of some of the states appointing sensorsEditorial Note: Likely, censors. Eddy is probably referring here to the state boards or “censors” who would license physicians. who require one man to give medicine and another to take it pinningAs Written:pining a man by statute to the way he shall live or die, are a blot upon the fair escutcheon of a republic. All honor to the old Bay StateEditorial Note: Massachusetts holding firm the flag of human rights in every contest true to the sentiment of justice the state that stepped As Written: steped her foot upon a proscriptive Medical law in 1880Editorial Note: Eddy is likely referring to a proposed medical licensure bill in Massachusetts, which would have limited the practice of medicine to physicians licensed by an independent state board. Homeopathy and eclectic medicine were included in the bill, along with traditional medicine; however, such a bill would have limited the practice of Christian Science. The bill was rejected in April 1880.. that protected a fugitive slave in 1855Editorial Note: Eddy is likely referring to a personal liberty law passed in Massachusetts, which prohibited state officials from assisting in the capture or return of fugitive slaves.. Aye Plymouth Rock gave granite to liberty in Massachusetts when the pilgrim fathers shook the depths of the desert gloom with hymns of lofty cheer"Editorial Note: The phrases “desert gloom” and “hymns of lofty cheer” are found in a poem by Felicia Hemans (1793 – 1835) titled “Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers.” the prohibitory laws of a majority of these United States regulating medical practice are unconstitutional, they intermeddle with the rights of the individual to life, liberty, and the pursuit As Written: persuit of happiness rights that our constitution declares inalienableEditorial Note: In the 1870s, a number of states enacted some form of medical licensure laws to limit the practice of medicine to licensed physicians. What is the M.D.s desolate diploma to a Christian As Written: christian Scientist, when Jesus hath not demanded it? he commanded As Written: commandded his students to preach the gospel and to heal the sick, but he never held up for worship the golden calfEx 32:1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. Ex 32:2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. Ex 32:3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. Ex 32:4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. Ex 32:5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To-morrow is a feast to the Lord. Ex 32:6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. Ex 32:7 ¶And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: Ex 32:8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. Ex 32:9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: Ex 32:10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. Ex 32:11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? Ex 32:12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people. Ex 32:13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. Ex 32:14 And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people. Ex 32:15 ¶And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. Ex 32:16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. Ex 32:17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. Ex 32:18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear. Ex 32:19 ¶And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. Ex 32:20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it. Ex 32:21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them? Ex 32:22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief. Ex 32:23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. Ex 32:24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf. Ex 32:25 ¶And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:) Ex 32:26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord’s side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. Ex 32:27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. Ex 32:28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men. Ex 32:29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves to-day to the Lord, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day. Ex 32:30 ¶And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin. Ex 32:32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. Ex 32:33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. Acts 17:24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Acts 17:25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; carrying Christianity As Written: christianity into Europe; and Paul stood where Socrates As Written: Socratees had stood four hundred years before defending himself against the charge of atheism; and when Demosthenes had pleaded in immortal strains of eloquence for religious freedom. Compare for a moment the power of Truth and the superiority of mind over matter, to eradicate disease, with a helpless inanimate drug, and then declare ye, if God be God and there is none like unto HimPs 86:8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works. Jer 10:6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. Then when you pray "thy kingdom" comeMatt 6:10 Thy kingdom come. And lo! the star which they saw in the east went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child wasMatt 2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

That star prefigured the idea Divine Science and only the watching, willing, working Christian As Written: christian beholds it, and it guides him to the cradle of a new Life, where unto him a child is born a new idea hath birth, he beholds it he understands it and loves it.

The Chaldean's faith in the stars was prophetic, to him these silent guardians of the night clad in silver armor were a beauty and a mystery, but superstition instead of Science had crowned them; the Seer of the Orient read the fate of men and empires in a star, the heavens were a revelation, to him the rain hath a father who hath begotten the drops of the dewJob 38:28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew? while we of the Occident As Written: Oxident liken the scintillations As Written: cintillations of fame, fortune and power to a star, and divine not but precipitate fate.

Does the face of heaven blush at the dawn, because the star that once rose in the east went down to earth, for the god of day, when the power of Truth to heal the sick was exchanged by Pagan priest for imaginary properties of matter? It was superstition that would enthrone the earth and cast down the sun, that magnifies darkness and shuts out light, but Science reinstated the sun in the stellar universe and made the earth obey it, even as it brings light to mankind, establishing the sovereignty As Written: sovereignity of Spirit and causing matter to yield all claims—But Science must traverse the night of the age, wade through gloom until the child is born, the idea hath birth, and the glad tidings of great joyLuke 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. are proclaimed to all people

Mary's spiritual conception of being,—that God is the only Father of man,—is reinstated, and again the shepherds shout, "for unto us a child is bornIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. ," a new idea hath appeared! and we have seen the star in the eastMatt 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. , the divine Science that guides thereto, The Truth has dawned upon us—that Spirit is the only Life, Substance and Intelligence of man; and just as it came to the waiting wise men of old, it comes to the waiting heart todayAs Written:to day, a Prince of peace, healing the sick, casting out error, raising the dead, lifting our sense of life from matter to Spirit; - and of the increase of His government there shall be no endIsa 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. . But this babe of Christian As Written: christian Science, the age layeth again in a manger, wrapped in swaddling As Written: swadling clothes, nursed in obscurity, for the Herods of today decreeeth its deathMatt 2:16 ¶Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Matt 2:17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, Matt 2:18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. . But fear ye not little flockLuke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. , this son of God, this offspring of Principle abideth forever. Is Divine Science your guiding star in the heavens of Soul? has it broken the solemn night and are you up with the dawn, at tasks of duty, laboring while the day lasteth, working in the light given you for work and not slumber, action and not ease; Yes I know it Thou art not laboring for that which perisheth!John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. Matt 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, Matt 20:4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. For unto us a child is bornIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Over 1800 years ago the advent of a babe stamped a new impress on history Little dreamed the Emperor enthroned in his gorgeous palace upon the Capitoline hill that a babe slumbering in a manger in the obscure hamlet of Bethlehem a remote province of AsyriaEditorial Note: Assyria was a kingdom of Northern Mesopotamia, centered on the Tigris River, and located in what is now northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey, northeastern Syria, and some of northwestern Iran. was to establish an empire before which the power of the Ceasars Corrected: Caesars must dwindle in insignificance.

When the child Jesus was born all the nations known of that period were in subjection to the government of Rome Around the Mediterraneon Corrected: Mediterranean shores were clustered the thronged provinces and majestic cities that gave Rome the palm of dynasties. the Atlantic Ocean was an unexplored Sea, the Indies had but a fabulous existence. Rome was then the world and Ceasar Corrected: Caesar was the governor of Rome, he could do what he pleased with the property the liberty and lives of over three hundred millions of people comprising the Roman Empire. Such power no no mortal ever swayed before such power no mortal will ever sway again.X The prophetEditorial Note: Isaiah saith "For unto us a child is bornIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. " 1st Let us consider what gave this declaration its especial interest, 2nd What was that star in they saw seen in the east that went before them till it came and stood over where the young child wasMatt 2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. .

Millions of children were born before the babe of Bethlehem, but they they were not heralded by angels or tokens in the heavens Even the the natural History of Jesus furnishes the fact, that the meek Nazareen Corrected: Nazarene was the most conspicuous character that ever trod the globe

Uneducated, he put to flight shame the arrogant Rabbis, overthrew the proudest systems of philosophy ancient and modern; yea warrior, and king and philosopher went down before him, and his teachings and demonstrations are destined to take christianity Corrected: Christianity back to its primitive definitions. Well might the prophet Isaih Corrected: Isaiah sing—for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderfull, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. And did not That Hebrew MelodistEditorial Note: Isaiah discerned just cause for clapping hands, when a mighty Truth welling up from the Infinite presented itself to mortal sense, and that sense kissed it and called it a babe And did not that wise seerEditorial Note: Isaiah forecast the destiny of Truth when he said the government shall be upon its shoulder; that it shall be found a marvelous guide, instructor an Omnipotent power, an imperishable Principle.

But remember the Hebrew bardEditorial Note: Isaiah in his grand epic refered Corrected: referred not to thate little bunch of flesh, phosphat Corrected: phosphate and linen lying in a crib, but to the advent of the Spiritual idea namely that idea of Life is evolved from of Spirit only and man begotten of the Principle not person. That a perfect Mind evolves reflecting a perfect man a true idea of God —that and Mind neither originates from or nor results in materiality. that Soul never cribed Corrected: cribbed with beasts, Spirit never blentding with matter, Soul is dust, Spirit untouched by evil passions and nortality. Corrected: mortality . X Retaining his conscious spiritual existence and entity, the mind of Jesus in could best interpret mind its native domain of mind instead of matter. Hence his control that he Jesus exercised over over matter, or material belief, andeven the error called mortal man.

The life of Jesus was identical with Truth and Love, even hence it was the Life that is God. he demonstrated Spirit free from all the fetters, of matter, Love unselfish and universal, the healing power of Truth, and Life immortal, Soul the Substance of man, and body the idea of Soul. X He separated a the material from a the Spiritual sense of religion, things establishing ed in divine science the reality and continuance of all things spiritual, and the nothingness of material things. To him matter was shadow, and Spirit was the only Substance; the permanent and eternal side of things were their Truth the holy the thoughts that formed them that gave them birth them named them, and announced them ideas of God of Mind instead of a [ ] A verity, We must be born againJohn 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. to understand the Metaphysics of our Master, born of the Spirit and not of the flesh. and the government shall be upon his shouldersIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. .

Great epochs begin with the birth of new ideasrelating to God and man. As When our idea of God grows more becomes im impersonal we shall love Him more and love in its affections and we love Truth only for Truth's sake and this will we are imbue us with a more divine and less human affection and purpose; this aim and love and this spiritual conception will give birth to a higher individuality, when man becomes a babe in Christ, born meekly because of its by reason of his surroundings in the manger of worldliness sin, and self. X When Columbus gave birth to his thoughts of the globe, when Thomas Jefferson John Brown uttered the impregnable principle of liberty and another individual when another declared the supremacy of Spirit its power to heal the sick and destroy all error the forpower of mind over matter the fortunes of the race were gradually turned into a higher channel by the mild pressure of Truth. It is the great conceptions of meek and noiseless birth, and not the tumultuous effervessence Corrected: effervescence that change the existing state of things and gently force man onward. The silent light, drawing artists pictures cheering the cot, gilding the palace, gleaming through the lattice, glinting upon the church dome, glancing into the dungeon, gliding into the sick room, brightening the flower, beautifying the landscape, blessing the world, is not egotistical; but the loud whirlwind, is the the sign and product of disunion and weakness, passes on and is forgotten. The most notable period of the ages was that when a Gallean Corrected: Galilean peasant told uttered by the wayside and in humble homes, to artless listeners, to dull disciples, and to wondering ears, his simple sense of Truth how it telling them it healed the sick it, reformed the sinner and despoiled the grave of its victory of the graveI Cor 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

He trusted his words to the providence of God, but in no fact seems the man of Galilee greater than in his serene sense of the immortality of what he uttered, and demonstrated. Said he, "heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass awayMatt 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Mark 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. " what a calm confidence was that in over the superior permanence of Mind over matter. If we wrote if we study life aright we shall never sneer at abstractions as visionary or unreal, if they are false they are unsubstantial as the corruscations Corrected: coruscations in the northen Corrected: northern sky, but if true they are permanent, impregnable as Principle resistless as right X In Mary's meek conception of God's man the man that God produces the Judean shepherds saw the everpresent Corrected: ever-present good the Imanuel, Corrected: Immanuel, but the God with man, and the virgin mother saw her own son; then her own thought embodied in its purity The vision of Mary rose above the maternal instinct of the flesh and gave giving place to prophecy— mutely she pondered his the earthly fate of God's idea Even a mother's pride and doating Corrected: doting She was not blind to the necessities of his God-mission on earth historythat the divine must touch the human and the human would struggle with the divine. X Conscious of in part of the power of Truth and Love also the supremacy of Spirit over matter and also aware that her son was the idea and representative of this divine Science Mary said to him at the marriage feastJohn 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: John 2:2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. John 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. , "they have no wine" in other words this weding Corrected: wedding is uninspired and he replied "woman (how significant that word to his Mother!) Mine hour is not yet come" Modest of his spirituality understanding Jesus had not then full confidence in his power to illustrate the great facts of the Spirit supremacy, but his mother's having had proof of this in the immaculate proof of the divine power, reassured her and she conception urged this exhibition on of on her son—she would have him demonstrate mind creative causal, and able to present the form and character of a thought tangibly to the senses Then she said unto the servants "whatever he saith unto you do it" Then And Jesus turned the water into wine spiritually and literally but remember the senses alone saw the saw wine water as wine Soul God, Spirit, never made wine But changes mortal thought, motive and act through but it christened all things thoughts changed but inspiration, not intoxication X The guests at Galilee knew that Mind not matter made their wine, and they aught to have known that the object before their senses was only a thought presented to their thought that and they called it wine.[sic] for the Master of Metaphysics could only gave to marriage the inspiration of Soul and not sense instead of sense The Spiritual origin of Jesus confered Corrected: conferred upon him above all others a clear understanding of the Omnipotence of Spirit and Mind and the nothingness of matter yea and the undivided realm and reign of Spirit The Scriptures declare that the simple Jesus' demonstration at the marriage, "manifested forth his glory and hisJohn 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. deciples Corrected: disciples believed on himJohn 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. But would it be it said of christianity Corrected: Christianity to dayOriginal:today predicated of such proof—that it manifests forth His glory? Ah! No, not Until the divine Principle and Science of this transforming power is appehended Corrected: Apprehended it cannot can it present a the proof of divine power

The same Principal which turned the belief of water into a belief of wine, reveals the great Metaphysical fact, that all is Mind, and matter is one of its beliefs constantly changing and passing away, until there is no more sea asRev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. in the vision of the Revelator. The same divine Principle changed the rushing current of blood to a milder flow when he and said to the sick of fever "rise and walk". and the same divine Principle that destroys sickness is the great-Truth that destroys all error, sin sickness and death. Jesus atoned for sickness and death as much as for sin, for the Truth he demonstrated destroys them all and his sufferings arose both and he suffered only from the world's hatred of Truth

The all-engrossing care for our bodies – the all-absorbing selfishness and sensualism entrenched within every form of society, betrays the greatest ignorance of what constitutes happiness and the inspiration of Life actual of being The erring thought called mortal mind has little faith in the might of Immortal Mind the great and unerring Intelligence; wrong has no faith in right since because it can never be right, and but so we we we should we weary of that self which never fulfills the destiny of man; and should love with the whole affections the latent moral power that values life only for its uses and spurns the abuse of being. Remembering It was the holy aim, and pure thoughts that made man things perfect that laid the foundations in the mind of Mary his mother that and which was outlined the character of Jesus The motive and results of such a mind is are crowned its by birthright of purity blesses, they bless involuntarily, individually and universally; they have it has not the power to harm, but to help mankind. Animated by his birthright with the by a the with the spiritual and divine sense of being and its high behest he Jesus overcame the world.

The purity of his origin reproduced itself in the aims the affections and achievements of the man Jesus, Jesus in him Divine Science had a fit representative, and philosophy had to admit that the power of man is immortal mind, not matter, and that animal force, serpentine art, sagacity misguided, can never contribute to success in Science They are a shame to man, they belie his words, belittle his deeds and betray their origin X Law can never render the animal propensities fit progenitors of the human or the divine

Man begotten of Spirit reflects God, and the higher qualities instincts and possibilities of Mind are born of Spirit and not of the flesh X In the original texts the word son implied a variety of decents, Corrected: descents, the child a year old was termed the son of a year etc In the Hebrew son did sense not indicate a parentage human or Divine Father was not determined by the word son Jesus was a man and God was his Father in the same sense that He is ours that He is ours and the Principle of real being The mighty difference between the Nazareen, Corrected: Nazarene, and a Nero, obtained in their different origins; mothers the bloody emperor's was a type of sin error and sensualism, and the meek and mighty Nazareen Corrected: Nazarene a Master's type of purity and Truth and Love were transmitted to them through by their parents. It was The parents of Nero that constituted him of and out of their own qualities of thought, constituted which qualities presented a monster rather than a man; the one earthly parent of Jesus (for he had but one) engraved upon her son the impress of her own poor thoughts which were allied to God who is the father of all goodness and blessedness X From the parable of the husbandmanMatt 21:33 ¶Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: Matt 21:34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. ".
