Editorial Title: Footprints Fadeless draft with edits
Author: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: Unknown
Manuscript Description: A10402 is a typewritten draft of Mary Baker Eddy's book, Footprints Fadeless, containing edits and corrections in her handwriting.
Editorial Note: Footprints Fadeless was written during the years 1901-1902 and copyrighted in 1902. However, it did not appear in print until one hundred years later in a volume published by The Christian Science Publishing Society. Titled Mary Baker Eddy: Speaking for Herself, in addition to Footprints Fadeless, the volume contains Eddy's autobiographical work, Retrospection and Introspection, first published in 1891. These works are prefaced by a scholarly introduction by Jana Reiss, a professor of American Studies and Religion at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Reiss points out that Eddy wrote Footprints Fadeless as a response to virulent attacks on her by Frederic Peabody, a lawyer representing Josephine Curtis Woodbury in an unsuccessful lawsuit against Eddy. Eddy includes in Footprints Fadeless text and documentation that specifically addresses Peabody's claims but was advised to not publish it at that time out of concern it could stir up more public controversy.
