The Science of ManEditorial Note: This document should not be confused with documents having the same title, The Science of Man, that were written by Mary Baker Eddy.. or the principle which controls all phenomena.

Preface.

In this science the names are given thus. God is Wisdom & this wisdom not an individuality, but a principle, which principle embraces every idea form of which the idea man is the highest, hence, the image of God or the principle. Jesus was the name of a man and Christ was the Truth (meaning in the original set apart) this truth was a part of God and the principle of the idea. Jesus, The Holy Ghost was science which the principle sends forth to reveal a truth, this truth which was Christ was the offspring of a principle which was God, the Father applying this Science to the idea man it stands thus–

Wisdom Love & Truth is the principle of the idea man & is health; Error is matter and all the sickness that can be is in it for all would be harmony and health if controlled As Written: controled by truth. Matter being but a belief is constantly changing, we cannot place truth in matter for truth never changes, hence, as Wisdom Love & Truth is the only intelligence it is a principle outside of matter and to give intelligence to matter is an error, which is sickness. This is all that can be sickness Viz. an error standing in science thus— Error is sickness. Truth is health. Error is matter Truth is God; God is right.. Error is wrong these two opposites, making God and the Devil, as used in scripture, and ultimating in Heaven and Hell, which are conditions of happiness or misery. Matter has no intelligence of its own: and to believe intelligence is in matter is the error which produces pain and inharmony of all sorts; to hold ourself as we are, a principle outside of matter we would not be influenced by the opinions of man but held to the workings only of a principle Truth in which there can be no inharmonies of sickness pain or sin; that the last enemy to be overcome is death, are the words of Christ who was truthEditorial Note: These words are words of the Apostle Paul, not Jesus Christ.. This science is the opposite of all isms. Mary M. Glover.

P P Quimby's Mrs Dr Quimby's writings are not to support any belief of man. But are the outpourings of a truth that sees the sick cast into prison for no other cause than for a belief in the opinions of man. By taking their feelings upon himself. he learns that this is their condition.Editorial Note: Quimby’s method of healing often involved his “taking on” the symptoms of the illnesses his patients were experiencing. One form this could take is that of a transference of the symptoms of a patient’s illness from the patient’s body to his, after which he would then work to overcome the symptoms he was now himself experiencing. In other cases, he would feel the symptoms of the patient without as complete a transference. and it calls forth As Written: fourth his plea in their behalf He stands to the sick as an attorney to a criminal. This is what he believes is meant As Written: ment by "mediator" and this truth Jesus intended to communicate to the world when he said they who are well need not a "physician" but they who are sickMatt 9:10 ¶And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. Matt 9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? Matt 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. Matt 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mark 2:15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. Mark 2:16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. Luke 5:30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? Luke 5:31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. Luke 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. . For this he pleads their cases & destroys As Written: destroyes their opinions given by man and sets the prisoner free into the liberty or Gospel of truth.

Questions by Patients.

The answers by Doctor P P Quimby.

QuestionAs Written:Ques 1st You must have a feeling of repugnance towards certain patients how do you overcome it and how may I do the same?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. In order to make you fully understand how I [?] Unclear or illegible  overcome this repugnance it will require some little explanation of my mode of healing the sick, for my cures are my wisdom, and the patient's As Written: patients disease is in his belief or knowledge for what a man thinks he knows is knowledge or opinion. but what is wisdom to man he has no opinion about, God is wisdom and wisdom is science, and the proof of getting science knowledge, belief or reason but when the answer comes our knowledge vanishes and we are swallowed up in God or wisdom. The sick are strangers to this wisdom being led by false guides without it who have eyes and see not. ears and hear not and hearts that cannot understandMatt 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. Matt 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: Matt 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Matt 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. , therefore like strangers they are at the mercy of everyone'sAs Written:every ones opinions. Having a strong desire for wisdom or health they call on everyoneAs Written:every one for this food or wisdom so when they ask for bread they recieve a stone or for water they recieve vinegarMatt 7:9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Matt 7:10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? Matt 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Luke 11:11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Luke 11:12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? and thus are they driven like sheep to the slaughter not daring to open their mouthIsa 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. . This is the state of the patient who asks the above questions. My wisdom sees their condition feels their woes, and comes to their rescue, but to get them from their enemies is often an arduous task The repugnance of which you speak. is not towards their personal senses but to the beliefs to which their senses are attached, as these beliefs are knowledge to them they are like a person deranged, and it is the identity disease with which I first come in contact. This is what I have to annihilateAs Written:anihilate, and at first I sometimes feel a repugnance towards the sick, but only such as a man would feel upon entering a Penitentiary to rescue a victim who has been innocently confined, the disturbance of the rescue sets the house in an uproar, the victim not knowing the cause is as much frightened as her enemies, But when I succeed in destroying her enemies or opinions, and get to her wisdom or self she receives As Written: recieves me or my wisdom as one who has saved her from the jaws of death, this to her is health and happiness. You say how can I do the same? If you believe this wisdom is superior to opinions, and that opinions are but the errors that man has embraced then when you come in contact with a person sick your wisdom will throw a veil of charity over their errors (if it is for the restoration of their health) But if the repugnance arises from some unknown cause examine yourself and see if the fault lies at your own door, if not you may be sure it is some false opinion in the person that troubles them so to overcome their evil or error, pour coals from the fire of love or charity in the form of right reason till you melt down the image of brass that is set up in their minds and they will leave their errors and embrace your truth this is heaven.

QuestionAs Written:Ques 2ndAs Written:2ond

You say when you know a thing it is not an opinion I can understand that. but how may I be really As Written: realy sure I know a thing? I have felt perfectly sure of a thing and afterwards As Written: afterwords found I had been in an error or had been mistaken.

AnswerAs Written:Ans Knowledge as I have said is not wisdom, but it may be harmony and it may seem like wisdom yet there is a discord, so discord is harmony not understood. To know how to correct this harmony or knowledge, that it may be wisdom is the question to consider. The first part of your question where you say, I understand, that contradicts the last paragraph which shows As Written: showes you do not understand. There is the discord. You say you have been perfectly sure of a thing and yet found that you had been mistaken! Now if your wisdom had been perfect in the thing which you thought you knew, it would have revealed the discord As Written: discourd or error. So to purify yourself from error that you may know the truth, is a process outsideAs Written:out side of matter, for there is no wisdom, nor truth in matter. So when you have arrived at a truth, if you find that with you it is attached to a belief, you may know it is not a truth to you, for a belief may change God is truth, and wisdom is God, and there is no other truth but God. If we know God the same is known of us. I will now try to attach your senses to God, but not the God of this world not what is believed by Churches to be God- but the God which is wisdom, and this is not the God of the dead but of the livingLuke 20:38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. . My God which is my wisdom is my standard As Written: standerd of truth and as I know God the same is known of me. I know I am writing if I know anything but to know I shall finish it admits a doubt. and to know that you will understand it admits more doubt, this doubt is not wisdom but belongs to that class of man's As Written: mans inventions called reason, knowledge et ceteraAs Written:&c. God is not seen in this question clearly, except so far as I see, but he is seen in the clouds of my knowledge when you read this, if you understand it, for then you will see God face to face, but not as Moses saw himEx 33:11 And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle. . I await your answer to learn whether he does or does not appear to your understanding. If he does, then this is your proof that you have been born As Written: boarn of God in this one thing and then you can know nothing more of this question. Man's As Written: Mans God is constantly listeningAs Written:listining, to our prayers, and settling As Written: settleing all sorts of questions My God acts not, he has finished his work and leaves As Written: leavs man to work out his happiness according to his wisdom, I will give you the attributes of my God, The wisdom or God is in this letter; if you understand, you will hear his voice saying I understand this, So the understanding is God for in that there is no matter, and to understand is wisdom not matter or mind, and to know wisdom is to know God, for that is wisdom. I will give you some idea of God reduced to man's knowledge. All sciences are a part of God and when a man understands science the same is known of God but the world's As Written: worlds God is based As Written: baced on man's As Written: mans opinions & right and wrong is the invention of man, while God is their reason but not known Here is an illusion. The bells are ringing – I walk to church and take a seat. The minister opens As Written: openes the bible and reads the text from John- The fact of going to church and seeing the minister is known to me, but there might be a doubt in regard to the bible for it might be another book. This last. I admit with a doubt, and also the verse and chapter is a doubt. He reads the 13th chap of John 36th verse where Peter says, "Lord why connot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee"!John 13:36 ¶Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. John 13:37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. All the above, so far as words go was true but when he comes to explain (after he came back) where Jesus went or if he went at all his wisdom was knowledge and he reminds one of Paul's words "all men have knowledge, knowledge puffeth up, Charity or wisdom edifiethI Cor 8:1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. . I could see nothing but an opinion of what he had read no wisdom a parable of something which he might know as a belief but not wisdom. The explanation of the bible is founded on man's opinions. not wisdom. The bible contains As Written: containes wisdom but it is not understood, and to prove a thing is to put your proof into practice for all can give an opinion. Jesus come into the world not to give an opinion but to bring light into the world upon something which was dark.John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. What was it? Where was it, and how did he describe it, and what was the remedy? He answered this when he called his disciples together and gave them power or wisdom to heal disease. Now if it was power, it belongs to matter and if it was not wisdom he knew not what wisdom was. but I have no doubt of what he meant As Written: ment to command them to do. In Math. chap 11thEditorial Note: The Bible quotations and allusions in the remainder of the answer to Question 2 are from this chapter of the Gospel of MatthewMatt 11:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. Matt 11:2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, Matt 11:3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? Matt 11:4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: Matt 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. Matt 11:6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. Matt 11:7 ¶And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? Matt 11:8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. Matt 11:9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. Matt 11:10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Matt 11:11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Matt 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. Matt 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. Matt 11:14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. Matt 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Matt 11:16 ¶But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, Matt 11:17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. Matt 11:18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. Matt 11:19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. Matt 11:20 ¶Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Matt 11:21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee,
Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
Matt 11:22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. Matt 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. Matt 11:24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. Matt 11:25 ¶At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Matt 11:26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. Matt 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Matt 11:28 ¶Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matt 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matt 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
.
he went to preach and put his preaching into practise John was cast into prison for preaching the coming of someoneAs Written:some one who should put this great truth into practice so he sent one of his disciples to Jesus to enquire if he was the one that was to come, or do we look for another? Now what was he to come for Jesus answered this great question when he said go tell John the things you have seen and heard, how the blind receive As Written: recieve their sight the lame walk et ceteraAs Written:&c. After telling how John or this truth had suffered and how it had been put down by force he made a parable of the ignorance of his generation saying we have piped unto you and you have not danced then giving a statement of errors he says O Father Lord of heaven and earth because thou hast hid this truth from the wise and prudent and revealed it unto babes even so is it. All things concerning these errors are revealed unto me by my Father no one knoweth the truth but the father; which is the principle save the man to whom the truth was revealed which was the son and those to whom he shall teach it. Then he saith, "come unto me all that are weary and heavy-laden and I will give you rest, take my yoke and learn of me for my burden As Written: berden is light" You see his labor was with the sick and not the well all his talk was to explain where the people had been deceived by the priests and doctors and that if they learned wisdom they would be healed. The knowledge of man puts a false construction on his wisdom, and gets up a sort of religion that has nothing to do with the truth of Jesus. If you do not believe the bible as they explain it, then you are put down for an infidel so all who cannot believe it as it has been explained must according to this throw it away. I do not throw away the bible but I throw the explanation that has been made of it away and apply the words of Jesus as he did and as he intended they should be applied and let my works speak for themselves whether they be of God or man and leave the sick to judge.

QuestionAs Written:Ques 3.rd

Our spiritual senses are often more acute than our personal senses what is the differenceAs Written:differance? and what do you call the spirit world?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. I will try to explain the difference As Written: differance between the spiritual and the personal senses If I had never seen you and wished to write you a letter on some worldly affair I should address your personal senses, and you would attach As Written: atach yourself to my knowledge. This belongs to the natural world and your happiness or misery is in your belief. But I have sat by you and taken your feelings, these are your spiritual senses, not wisdom, but ideas not named or classified. In the spiritual world there are things as in the natural world that affect us as much, but these are not knowledge the personal senses or wisdom. The separation As Written: seperation of these is what Jesus called the law and the gospel. The personal senses are under the law governed by the knowledge of the natural, subject to all the penalties and punishments man can invent, the spiritual senses have their spiritual world with all the inventions of the natural world but the communication is not admitted by the natural man only as a ministry. There is just as much progress in the spiritual as in the natural world and the science I teach is wisdom or God coming As Written: commig to the spiritual senses in the spirit world or that which is outside of the material belief which is the spirit world- So it requires a teacher to teach wisdom or God in this spirit world as well as that spiritual wisdom which has been reduced to man's senses in the so-calledAs Written:so called sciences, Paul says how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard, and how shall they hear with out a preacher or teacher and how can they teach unless they are sent"Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! i.e. As Written: ie understand how to teach for the understanding is God and sends to the man messages of truth. I am now talking to your spiritual senses, standing at your door knockingRev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. with my Wisdom at your heart or belief for admittance, if you can understand then will I come in and drink in this truth with you and you with me this is the spiritual world or sense. Suppose you are sick and feel you need a physician, then is the time you or the spiritual sense calls on me or my spiritual sense, and when I come if you know my voice, or understand which is knowing it you will open the door and when you understand I am with you.

QuestionAs Written:Ques. 4.th

Is not one's As Written: ones experience As Written: experiance wisdom to him in a certain sense?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. Wisdom is not knowledge, but the answer to our knowledge, but in error knowledge is wisdom till wisdom comes for example. Supposing I should make a sound that is not wisdom but a sensation. Supposing you try to imitate it this process As Written: proscess is called knowledge or reason when the sound is in the tone with me, this is wisdom not understood but we call it wisdom but when we can make the tone intelligently. and teach it to others, then this tone is the effect of wisdom and harmony which is wisdom comes out of the discord Wisdom is always the same, it is the point of all attraction and everything must come to this and this is the Christ. True wisdom contains no error or false wisdom but is harmony not understood. To illustrate– If you were to tell me a story that you say is true but you get your information from another (that I were to believe) to me it would be truth or wisdom, but truth says this is not truth nor wisdom for there is a chance for deception in it and wisdom leaves no loopholesAs Written:loop holes it can be tested and in this way demonstrated to be truth. This was the controversy of Jesus. The priests thought their opinions were wisdom but he knew they were not and were false to test their wisdom was to put it into practice and thus be known by his fruitMatt 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Matt 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Matt 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Matt 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matt 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. ; his works were to determine whether they were of God or man. Jesus showed his wisdom by his work for when they brought unto him the sick he healed them. So did others heal and called it in the same manner, But did they know how they healed them? Jesus knew how they healed and how he healed But they called it matter having power over matter. Jesus knew matter has no intelligence to hold over itself that the intelligence is all outside & given to it and this intelligence controls it whether to truth or error, i.e. As Written: ie. to health or sickness. In this the kingdom of heaven comes to the understanding. Had he not known, the world would never have been any wiser for seeing a demonstration which could not be explained to them. This wisdom was from above, i.e. As Written: ie. from truth & a principle theirs from opinions and beliefs of man this made the two worlds which are science and error; as man bears the world of error even so shall he bear through progress which is truth and immortality (while the world of error is mortal and dies) the world of science which cannot change or fade away.

QuestionAs Written:Ques 5.th

Is it possible for one to compress his spiritual self so as to be seen by the natural eye as did Jesus?

AnswerAs Written:Ans.—This question is not properly stated Jesus never said he had a spirit but said spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me haveLuke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. There was the truth on which they split The wisdom of Jesus was Christ or truth and this wisdom knew that it dwelt not in the idea body. Their knowledge made mind in and a part of the idea body so each reasoned according to their wisdom. Their wisdom was simply an opinion about what people had said a thousand years before with no proof whatever but merely as an opinion. This was what they called knowledge. Therefore the wisdom of Jesus which was Christ was an advent a new coming and also a ministry unto them. Thus when Christ or wisdom spake through Jesus saying though you destroy this temple yea will I build it again in three daysJohn 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. this that uttered the saying was the wisdom or builder so the builder was not destroyed but the temple or body. But they believed as most people of this day that the temple and builder were one and the same so that when the former was destroyed they had no idea what Christ intended to do Or to elucidate when the body was destroyed which was the idea matter they had no idea of what the principle of matter which is wisdom meant to do There comes in your question The Christ which was wisdom and which acted on the idea Jesus which was matter admitted flesh and bones as well as did matter ideas, or his enemies admit it but he knew it was only an idea that he could speak into or out of existence thus demonstrating that our body is an idea made up of our belief. So when they destroyed the body which was the idea Jesus, they also destroyed to themselves Christ i.e. As Written: ie. wisdom and matter wend together Now when this wisdom made himself manifest unto them they thought he was a spirit for they believed in spirits. But Christ to himself was the same Jesus as before for Jesus means the idea of flesh and blood and bones or senses or all that we call man. Now Christ retained all this and as we are to ourselves only that and just that which we believe so to himself he had flesh and bones or senses and was a man and not a spirit as they called him. This was to show that when you think a person dead he is dead to you. i.e.As Written:ie, you annihilate the idea and then it is lost to your personal senses, taken out of your sight. yea, buried As Written: burried in a sepulchre of the soul, but to himself there is no change, he retains As Written: retaines all the senses of the idea man as if no change to the world had taken place. Man then condenses As Written: condences his identity just according to his belief This all men do some more some less I cannot tell how much I can condense As Written: condence my identity to the sick but I know I can teach them so they can feel the sensation. To me I really As Written: realy see myself but I cannot tell about them I will try to prove the answer to you when you read this I will show you myself also the number of persons in the room when I am writing this let me know the impressions you may have of the number. This is the Christ of which Jesus spake how much of the Christ I can make known to you I await your answer to learn. Read the 14th chap John where he speaks of this truth that shall come to the desciplesJohn 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. John 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. John 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. John 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. John 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. John 14:15 ¶If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. John 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. John 14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. John 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. John 14:25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. John 14:29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. as I am coming As Written: comeing to you.

Question 6.th

If I understand how disease originates in the mind and fully believe it why cannot I cure myself?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. If you understand how disease originates then you stand to the patient as a lawyer does to the criminal who is to be tried for a crime committed against a law that he is ignorant of having broken and the evidence is his own confession. You know he is innocent but you can get no evidence thereof but by cross-questioning the evidence against him. Disease which is an error, has its attending counsel or plea, as well as has truth or health; and to cure the sick is to show to the judge or their counsel As Written: counsil (which is the argument that holds it in the belief) that the witness which was their confession or belief lies. This you have to show from the witness'sAs Written:witness'es own story then you get the case. The error which is sickness is on one side, and you or truth, on the opposite As Written: oposite side and out of the symptoms of disease come the witness and also out of the mouth of the sick. I will state a case; a sick person is like a stranger in his own land, or like an ignorant man not knowing what law is or right or wrong according to law. Both are strangers and both liable to get into trouble, so each is to be punished according to the crime he has committed Now the man ignorant of state laws wants a horse, and seeing one he takes it not knowing that he is liable to any punishment. but takes him as a matter of convenience and after using him all he desires lets him go. Now he is arrested for stealing and he being ignorant is cast into prison to await his trial. I appear against him as state's As Written: states attorney and you appear for the prisoner. All the testimony is on my side, but if you are shrewd enough to draw from me an acknowledgement that the law cannot punish a man being ignorant of the law. and I am the lawgiver and expounder in the case I say if you can draw from me this confession and I not know it after I have shown my testimony and made my plea then if you can show that the prisoner has been deceived As Written: decieved and led into the scrape by me I also having received As Written: recieved pay from him the court will give you the verdict and arrest and imprison me. A sick person is in precisely this very condition. The Priests & Doctors conspire together to humbug the people, and they have invented all sorts of stories to frighten man to keep him under their power These stories are handed down from generation to generation till at length priests and doctors believe they are God's As Written: Gods laws and that if a person disobeys one he is liable to be cast into prison. Supposing you are an M.D. or a teacher of the laws or what they call the laws of health and you happen to find a person who is perfectly ignorant of your law and also of disease as a consequence. But you call on her and commence explaining to her the great need there is for her to preserve her health & to become acquainted with those laws of yours will enable her to do it. She being ignorant or like a child sees no sense in your talk but you continue to explain throwing the atmosphere of your belief upon her and she will grow nervous then you keep on prating till she shows As Written: showes some sign of yielding to your opinion then you tell her she has a heart disease or lung disease and you have sown the seed that will spring up at some future time Tell her also that this disease will close up with dying at any time the judge of the court of reason sees fit to call her. At no distant day she will acknowledge this very disease of which she in her fright pleads guilty then you enter a complaint against her or in other words, tell someoneAs Written:some one else she is sick and then she is according to her belief arrested and thrown into prison there to await her trial. You are error's As Written: errors Attorney or the Devil's and he is the Judge. i.e.As Written:ie. sicknessAs Written:sickness' which is the error and which gives in the judgment As Written: judgement and she is brought into the court to be tried by error's As Written: errors tribunal. Now I appear for her having learned her story unknown to the judge or attorney I have the evidence and see that the very attorney against her is her deceiver As Written: deciever and the author As Written: auther of her trouble. This I keep to myself till I draw from the judge that a person cannot be tried for a crime they were forced to commit this being done I commence my plea for the victim and show that she never committed any offence against the laws of God and that she was born free as said St. PaulActs 22:28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born. . Then I take up the evidence and show that there is not one word of wisdom in all that has been said of her also that she has been led into the scrape and made to believe a lie that she might be damned and condemned and in this way get the case. Disease being made by our beliefs or by our parents' As Written: parents belief or by public opinion there is no one formula of argument to be adopted but everyoneAs Written:every one must be hit in their particular case, therefore it requires great shrewdness or wisdom to get the better of the error for disease is an error and the work of the devil who is the father of falsehoods of whom Christ or truth saith "when he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for the truth abode not in him."John 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. But happily he has his cloven foot and if you are as wise as your enemies you will get the case. I know of no better counsel than Jesus gave to his disciples when he sent them forth to cast out devils & heal the sick, and thus in practice to preach the truth then– "be ye wise as serpents and harmless as doves"Matt 10:16 ¶Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. i.e. As Written: ie. never get into a passion but in patience possess ye your soulsLuke 21:19 In your patience possess ye your souls. , and at length you weary out the discord and produce harmony by your truth destroying error then it is you get the case now if you are not afraid As Written: affraid to face the error and argue it down then you can heal the sick. But when wisdom which is truth calls upon you Adam where art thou? and you are afraid and go and hide awayGen 3:9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? Gen 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. then you cannot heal the sick with truth.

Question 7.th

I can see this belief places man superior to circumstances but will it not therefore take away the desire for improvement causing invention to cease and we on the whole go back instead of progress causing us also to become indifferent to friends and social relations, saying of everythingAs Written:every thing it is but an idea and without substance of truth and thus take away all reality in existence As Written: ixistance ?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. The answer to this is involved in the last part of it. You can answer by your own feelings. Have you with motionless lips pled As Written: plead to the father which is wisdom for the sick, condemned by the world and cast into prison with no voice of mercy sounding in their ears, but left to the cold icy hands of ignorance and superstition who having eyes see not and ears yet they cnnot understandMatt 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: Matt 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. . Now if you can plead their case so as to set them free from their prison of superstition and error into the broad light of science wisdom and happiness. there to mingle with the joys of the healthy and happy and knowing yourself to be the cause of so much happiness would not this be sufficient for you to continue your efforts for the salvation of the sick and suffering till the great work of reformation As Written: refermation is completed? This you can answer for yourself, and then say if it does not place man superior to the false interests of this world and instead of taking away the realities of existence As Written: existance make man's As Written: mans existence As Written: existance an eternal progression which will triumph over death and the grave and destroy death which is the last enemy to be overcomeI Cor 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. and bring life and truth which is immortality to lightII Tim 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: .

Question 8.th

Suppose a person kept in a mesmeric state what would be the result would he act independently As Written: indipendantly if allowed? If not, is it not an exact illustration of the condition we are in in order to have matter which is but an idea seem real to us? for we act independentlyAs Written:indipendently.

AnswerAs Written:Ans. I think I understand your question. God is the great magnet or mesmerizer He speaks man, or the idea, into existence As Written: existanse and attaches his senses to the idea and we to ourselves are just that and only that which we think we are. So is a mesmerized subject, they to themselves are matter. you may have as many subjects as you will and they are all in the same relation to each other as they would be in the state we call waking. So this is proof that we are affected As Written: effected by one another sometimes we act independently again we are governed by others but always retaining our own identity with all our ideas of matter and subject to all its changes as real as it is in the natural or what we call waking state.

Question 9.th

What do you think of Phrenology?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. As a science it is a mere As Written: mear humbug. At best it is but a polite way of pointing out the soft spots in a man's As Written: mans vanity.

Question 10.th

What is memory or that process by which we recall images of the past?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. I have explained memory in that class of reason called knowledge. It is one of the chemical As Written: cemical changes to arrive at a fact. Matter being only a shadow when the senses are detached from it we forget the shadow till it is called up by another shadow or idea. This is memory. If there was no association As Written: asociation there would be no memory and those who have the greatest amount of association As Written: asociation and least wisdom have the strongest memories for wisdom is understanding and presides over all this and relies on science and who rely on their wisdom dwell in the principle remembering cause and effect. While those who rely on observation and opinions are constantly attaching themselves and lives to the laws which man makes and calls laws of health et ceteraAs Written:&c. and this they call the law of reason. Such have great memories and hold life in their memory. But the former hold on to the principle more and are forgetful of events. Memory is the pleasure or pain of some cause or event which affects our happiness or misery or of somethingAs Written:some thing ludicrous. For instance, a man told another man his coattailAs Written:coat tail was short and he replied it will be long before I get another — attempting to repeat the joke forgot the sympathy or music in it and said a man told another his coattailAs Written:coat tail was short and he replied "it will be a long time before I get another one" but the company failing to laugh he continued I see nothing now to laugh at myself but when I heard it I laughed heartily. Memory is the effect of two ideas coming into harmony so as to produce an effect that leaves the sense of some idea either ridiculous As Written: rediculous or otherwise, embracing so many combinations that it brings up the scene, Memory one of the senses of man and will continue so long as the idea body exists.

Question 11.th

What became of the Jesus after it was laid in the sepulchre if you do not believe it rose?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. Jesus was the idea matter and those who believe that Jesus & Christ were one must have believed if they reasoned fairly that body and soul were crucified. Now came their doubts whether this same idea should be resurrectedAs Written:resurected. Some believed that it would others doubted but so far as Christ was concerned opinions could have no effects Christ was the wisdom that knew truth dwelt not in opinions and that matter was but an opinion that could be formed into any shape which the belief gave to it and that the life which moved it came not from it but was outside of it. there was where their wisdom differed the disciples As Written: deciples believed that the wisdom of man which was his God principle dwelling outside of matter would rise out of the error or idea man for matter is an error there As Written: ther being no substance which is truth in a thing which changes and is only that which belief makes it and matter comes under the classification As Written: classifecation of memory. How far their idea Jesus went I cannot say. Some said he was stolen, others that he rose.Matt 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. Matt 28:2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. Matt 28:3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: Matt 28:4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. Matt 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. Matt 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. Matt 28:7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. Matt 28:8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. Matt 28:9 ¶And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Matt 28:10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Matt 28:11 ¶Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. Matt 28:12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, Matt 28:13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. Matt 28:14 And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. Matt 28:15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. There is as good reason for believing one story as another Jesus said nothing about it. Now I take Christ's As Written: Christs own words for the truth when he said "touching the dead that they rise" "God is not the God of the dead but the living"Mark 12:26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? Mark 12:27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. He knew they could not understand but to himself Christ went through no change, to his disciples he died. So when they saw him they were afrid because they thought he was a spirit but Christ had not forgoten his identity Jesus or flesh and blood. So he saith "a spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me have"Luke 24:36 ¶And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. Luke 24:37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. Luke 24:38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Luke 24:40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. If the christians of this day could have been there with their present beliefs I have my doubts whether they could have seen anythingAs Written:any thing, or heard a sound. I believe Christ did appear and show himself as dense as their beliefs could be made, but their unbelief made the idea so rarified that it was a spirit to them These are my ideas of the resurrection As Written: resurection of Christ. but Jesus the world's belief if the people were as they are now was without doubt taken away at any rate their idea man never rose Christ lost nothing by the change every person rises from the dead with their own belief so to themselves they are not risen and know no change and the dead as they are called have no idea of themselves as dead.

Question 12th

Do we receive As Written: recieve impressions through the senses and they acting on the mind constitute knowledge?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. This question is answered by Paul to the Romans although he did not use the same words. This belief means As Written: meanes faith the peace in the truth was through their belief. Hope is the anchorHeb 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Heb 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. made fast to the truth belief is the knowledge that we shall obtain this truth. So that we glory in the tribulation or action of the mind knowing that it brings patience and patience confidence and confidence experience that we shall obtain this truth.Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Rom 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Rom 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; Rom 5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Knowledge is opinions so when an impression As Written: impresion is made on the mind it produces a chemical As Written: cemical change this comes to the senses and opens a door of hope to this great truth this is the world's As Written: worlds knowledge or religion that is used like an anchor to the senses till we outrideAs Written:out ride the gale of investigation and land in the haven of rest which is God or truth.

Question 13.th

How is matter made the medium of the intelligence of man?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. There are two ideas, and one idea is spirit and one matter. When you speak of man you speak of matter when you speak of spirit you speak of knowledge that will live after the matter is destroyed or dead. This is the christian religion. With God or truth all the above is only opinions and ideas with no wisdom All this belief is embraced in his knowledge and is an illusion that contains no life, in knowledge or spirit but lives moves and has its identity in his wisdom. So that to itself it is a living moving somethingAs Written:some thing with power to act create and to destroy. Its happiness and misery are in itself So when A's. shadow is destroyed, to B. and C. he is dead. So the shadow is the medium of truth and error, to error it is matter, but to truth it is an illusion.

Question 14.th

Do I err in thinking knowledge the effect of some influence on the mind instead of something independent As Written: indipendant of the whole individual?

AnswerAs Written:Ans. No. but you err in thinking that knowledge is wisdom knowledge is the effect of an influence on the mind and is the medium that carries the senses to the great truth.

Question 15th

AnswerAs Written:Ans. No! no more than a mathematician can solve every problem without a reaction, but as he becomes master of the science the reaction diminishes, till all error is destroyed

Extracts from Dr. P P. Quimby's Writings

Jesus, The Holy Ghost was science which the principle sends forth to reveal a truth, this truth which was Christ was the offspring of a principle which was God, the Father applying this sScience to the idea man it stands thus–

Wisdom Love & Truth is the principle of the idea man & is health; Error is matter and all the sickness that can be is in it for all would be harmony and health if controled Corrected: controlled by truth. Matter has no intelligence of its own: and to believe intelligence is in matter is the error which produces pain and inharmony of all sorts; to hold ourself as we are, a principle outside of matter we would not be influenced by the opinions of [?] Unclear or illegible  man but held to the workings only of a principle Truth in which there can be no inharmonyies of sickness pain or sin; that the last enemy to be overcome is death, are the words of Christ who was truthEditorial Note: These words are words of the Apostle Paul, not Jesus Christ..

In other cases, he would feel the symptoms of the patient without as complete a transference. and it calls fourth Corrected: forth his plea in their behalf He stands to the sick as an attorney to a criminal. This is what he believes is ment Corrected: meant by "mediator" and this truth Jesus intended to communicate to the world when he said they who are well need not a "physician" but they who are sickMatt 9:10 ¶And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. Luke 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. . For this he pleads their cases & destroyes Corrected: destroys their opinions given by man and sets the prisoner free into the liberty or Gospel of truth.

Questions by Patients.

The answers by Doctor P P Quimby.

QuesExpanded:Question 1st You must have a feeling of repugnance towards certain patients how do you overcome it and how may I do the same?

Ans.Expanded:Answer In order to make you fully understand how I [?] Unclear or illegible  overcome this repugnance it will require some little explanation of my mode of healing the sick, for my cures are my wisdom, and the patients Corrected: patient's disease is in his belief or knowledge for [?] Unclear or illegible  what a man thinks he knows is knowledge or opinion. but what is wisdom to man he has no opinion about, God is wisdom and wisdom is science, and the proof of getting science knowledge, belief or reason but when the answer comes our knowledge vanishes and we are swallowed up in God or wisdom. Matt 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. , therefore like strangers they are at the mercy of every onesCorrected:everyone's opinions. Having a strong desire for wisdom or health they call on every oneCorrected:everyone for this food or wisdom so when they ask for bread they recieve a stone or for water they recieve vinegarMatt 7:9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? This is what I have to anihilateCorrected:annihilate, and at first I sometimes feel a repugnance towards the sick, but only such as a man would feel upon entering a Penitentiary to rescue a victim who has been innocently confined, the disturbance of the rescue sets the house in an uproar, the victim not knowing the cause is as much frightened as her enemies, But when I succeed in destroying her enemies or opinions, and get to her wisdom or self she recieves Corrected: receives me or my wisdom as one who has saved her from the jaws of death, this to her is health and happiness. You say how can I do the same? To know how to correct this harmony or knowledge, that it may be wisdom is the question to consider. The first part of your question where you say, I understand, that contradicts the last paragraph which showes Corrected: shows you do not understand. There is the discord. QuesExpanded:Question 3.rd

Our spiritual senses are often more acute than our personal senses what is the differanceCorrected:difference? and what do you call the spirit world?

Ans.Expanded:Answer I will try to explain the differance Corrected: difference between the spiritual and the personal senses If I had never seen you and wished to write you a letter on some worldly affair I should address your personal senses, and you would atach Corrected: attach yourself to my knowledge. The seperation Corrected: separation of these is what Jesus called the law and the gospel. The personal senses are under the law governed by the knowledge of the natural, subject to all the penalties and punishments man can invent, the spiritual senses have their spiritual world with all the inventions of the natural world but the communication is not admitted by the natural man only as a ministry. There is just as much progress in the spiritual as in the natural world and the science I teach is wisdom or God commig Corrected: coming to the spiritual senses in the spirit world or that which is outside of the material belief which is the spirit world- So it requires a teacher to teach wisdom or God in this spirit world as well as that spiritual wisdom which has been reduced to man's senses in the so calledCorrected:so-called sciences, Paul says how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard, and how shall they hear with out a preacher or teacher and how can they teach unless they are sent"Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! ie Corrected: i.e. understand how to teach for the understanding is God and sends to the man messages of truth.

Is not ones Corrected: one's experiance Corrected: experience wisdom to him in a ciertain sense?

Ans.Expanded:Answer Wisdom is not knowledge, but the answer to our knowledge, but in error knowledge is wisdom till wisdom comes for example. Supposing I should make a sound that is not wisdom but a sensation. Supposing you try to imitate it this proscess Corrected: process is called knowledge or reason when the sound is in the tone with me, this is wisdom not understood but we call it wisdom but when we can make the tone intelligently. and teach it to others, then this tone is the effect of wisdom and harmony which is wisdom comes out of the discord Wisdom is always the same, it is the point of all attraction and everything must come to this and this is the Christ. True wisdom contains no error or false wisdom but is harmony not understood. To illustrate– If you were to tell me a story that you say is true but you get your information from another (that I were to believe) to me it would be truth or wisdom, but truth says this is not truth nor wisdom for there is a chance for deception in it and wisdom leaves no loop holesCorrected:loopholes it can be tested and in this way demonstrated to be truth. Jesus knew matter has no intelligence to hold over itself that the intelligence is all outside & given to it and this intelligence controls it whether to truth or error, ie. Corrected: i.e. to health or sickness. In this the kingdom of heaven comes to the understanding. Had he not known, the world would never have been any wiser for seeing a demonstration which could not be explained to them. This wisdom was from above, ie. Corrected: i.e. from truth & a principle theirs from opinions and beliefs of man this made the two worlds which are science and error; as man bears the world of error even so shall he bear through progress which is truth and immortality (while the world of error is mortal and dies) the world of science which cannot change or fade away.

QuesExpanded:Question 5.th

Is it possible for one to compress his spiritual self so as to be seen by the natural eye as did Jesus?

Ans.Expanded:Answer—This question is not properly stated Jesus never said he had a spirit but said spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me haveLuke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Therefore the wisdom of Jesus which was Christ was an advent a new comeing and also a mi [?] Unclear or illegible nistry unto them. But they believed as most people of this day that the temple and builder were one and the same so that when the former was destroyed they had no idea what Christ intended to do Or to elucidate when the body was destroyed which was the idea matter they had no idea of what the principle of matter which is wisdom meant to do There comes in your question The Christ which was wisdom and which acted on the idea Jesus which was matter admitted flesh and bones as well as did matter ideas, or his enemies admit it but he knew it was only an idea that he could speak into or out of existence thus demonstrating that our body is an idea made up of our belief made up of our belief. So when they destroyed the body which was the idea Jesus, they also destroyed to themselves Christ ie. Corrected: i.e. wisdom and matter wend together Now when this wisdom made himself manifest unto them they thought he was a spirit for they believed in spirits. This was to show that when you think a person dead he is dead to you. ieCorrected:i.e., you annihilate the idea and then it is lost to your personal senses, taken out of your sight. yea, burried Corrected: buried in a sepulchre of the soul, but to himself there is no change, he retaines Corrected: retains all the senses of the idea man as if no change to the world had taken place. Man then condences Corrected: condenses his identity just according to his belief This all men do some more some less I cannot tell how much I can condence Corrected: condense my identity to the sick but I know I can teach them so they can feel the sensation. To me I realy Corrected: really see myself but I cannot tell about them I will try to prove the answer to you when you read this I will show you myself also the number of persons in the room when I am writing this let me know the impressions you may have of the number. This is the Christ of which Jesus spake how much of the Christ I can make known to you I await your answer to learn. Read the 14th chap John where he speaks of this truth that shall come to the desciplesJohn 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Question 6.th

If I understand how disease originates in the mind and fully believe it why cannot I cure myself?

Ans.Expanded:Answer If you understand how disease originates then you stand to the patient as a lawyer does to the criminal who is to be tried for a crime committed gagainst a law that he is ignorant of having broken and the evidence is his own confession. You know he is innocent but you can get no evidence thereof but by cross-questioning the evidence against him. Disease which is an error, has its atte [?] Unclear or illegible nding counsel or plea, as well as has truth or health; and to cure the sick is to show to the judge or their counsil Corrected: counsel (which is the argument that holds it in the belief) that the witness which was their confession or belief lies. This you have to show from the witness'esCorrected:witness's own story then you get the case. The error which is sickness is on one side, and you or truth, on the oposite Corrected: opposite side and out of the symptoms of disease come the witness and also out of the mouth of the sick. I will state a case; a sick person is like a stranger in his own land, or like an ignorant man not knowing what law is or right or wrong according to law. Both are strangers and both liable to get into trouble, so each is to be punished according to the crime he has committed Now the man ignorant of the state laws wants a horse, and seeing one he takes it not knowing that he is liable to any punishment. but takes him as a matter of convenience and after using him all he desires lets him go. Now he is arrested for stealing and he being ignorant is cast into prison to await his trial. I appear against him as states Corrected: state's attorney and you appear for the prisoner. All the testimony is on my side, but if you are shrewd enough to draw from me an acknowledgement that the law cannot punish a man being ignorant of the law. and I am the lawgiver and expounder in the case I say if you can draw from me this confession and I not know it after I have shown my testimony and made my plea then if you can show that the prisoner has been decieved Corrected: deceived and led into the scrape by me I also having recieved Corrected: received pay from him the court will give you the verdict and arrest and imprison me. A sick person is in precisely this very condition. The Priests & Doctors conspire together to humbug the people, and they have invented all sorts of stories to frighten man to keep him under their power These stories are handed down from generation to generation till at length priests and doctors believe they are Gods Corrected: God's laws and that if a person disobeys one he is liable to be cast into prison. She being ignorant or like a child sees no sense in your talk but you continue to throw explain throwing the atmosphere of your belief upon her and she will grow nervous then you keep on prating till she showes Corrected: shows some sign of yielding to your opinion then you tell her she has a heart disease or lung disease and you have sown the seed that will spring up at some future time Tell her also that this disease will close up with dying at any time the judge of the court of reason sees fit to call her. At no distant day she will acknowledge this very disease of which she in her fright pleads guilty then you enter a complaint against her or in other words, tell some oneCorrected:someone else she is sick and then she is according to her belief arrested and thrown into prison there to await her trial. You are errors Corrected: error's Attorney or the Devil's and he is the Judge. ie.Corrected:i.e. sickness'Corrected:sickness which is the error and which gives in the judgement Corrected: judgment and she is brought into the court to be tried by errors Corrected: error's tribunal. Now I appear for her having learned her story unknown to the judge or attorney I have the evidence and see that the very a [?] Unclear or illegible ttorney against her is her deciever Corrected: deceiver and the auther Corrected: author of her trouble. Disease being made by our beliefs or by our parents Corrected: parents' belief or by public opinion there is no one formula of argument to be adopted but every oneCorrected:everyone must be hit in their particular case, therefore it requires great shrewdness or wisdom to get the better of the error for disease is an error and the work of the devil who is the father of falsehoods of whom Christ or truth saith "when he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for the truth abode not in him."John 8:43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. I know of no better counsel than Jesus gave to his disciples when he sent them forth to cast out devils & heal the sick, and thus in practice to preach the truth then– "be ye wise as serpents and harmless as doves"Matt 10:16 ¶Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. ie. Corrected: i.e. never get into a passion but in patience possess ye your soulsLuke 21:19 In your patience possess ye your souls. , and at length you weary out the discord and produce harmony by your truth destroying error then it is you get the case now if you are not affraid Corrected: afraid to face the error and argue it down then you can heal the sick.

I can see this belief places man superior to circumstances but will it not therefore take away the desire for improvement causing invention to cease and we on the whole go back instead of progress causing us also to become indifferent to friends and social relations, saying of every thingCorrected:everything it is but an idea and without substance of truth and thus take away all reality in ixistance Corrected: existence ?

Ans.Expanded:Answer The answer to this is involved in the last part of it. You can answer by your own feelings. Have you with motionless lips plead Corrected: pled to the father which is wisdom for the sick, condemned by the world and cast into prison with no voice of mercy sounding in their ears, but [?] Unclear or illegible left to the cold icy hands of ignorance and superstition who having eyes see not and ears yet they cnnot understangdMatt 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: Matt 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. . Now if you can plead their case so as to set them free from their prison of superstition and errosr into the broad light of science wisdom and happiness. there to mingle with the joys of the healthy and happy and knowing yourself to be the cause of so much happiness would not this be sufficient for you to continue your efforts for the salvation of the sick and suffering till the great work of refermation Corrected: reformation is completed? This you can answer for yourself, and then say if it does not place man superior to the false interests of this world and instead of taking away the realities of existance Corrected: existence make mans Corrected: man's existance Corrected: existence an eternal progression which will triumph over death and the grave and destroy death which is the last enemy to be overcomeI Cor 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. and bring life and truth which is immortality to lightII Tim 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: .

Question 8.th

Suppose a person kept in a mesmeric state what would be the result would he act indipendantly Corrected: independently if allowed? If not, is it not an exact illustration of the condition we are in in order to have matter which is but an idea seem real to us? for we act indipendentlyCorrected:independently.

Ans.Expanded:Answer I think I understand your question. God is the great magnet or mesmerizer He speaks man, or the idea, into existanse Corrected: existence and attaches his senses to the idea and we to ourselves are just that and only that which we think we are. So is a mesmerized subject, they to themselves are matter. you [?] Unclear or illegible may have as many subjects as you will and they are all in the same relation to each other as they would be in the state we call waking. So this is proof that we are effected Corrected: affected by one another sometimes we act independently again we are governed by others but always retaining our own identity with all our ideas of matter and subject to all its changes as real as it is in the natural or what we call waking state.

Question 9.th

What do you think of Phrenology?

Ans.Expanded:Answer As a science it is a mear Corrected: mere humbug. At best it is but a polite way of pointing out the soft spots in a mans Corrected: man's vanity.

Question 10.th

What is memory or that process by which we recall images of the past?

Ans.Expanded:Answer I have explained memory in that class of reason called knowledge. It is one of the cemical Corrected: chemical changes to arrive at a fact. Matter being only a shadow when the senses are detached from it we forget the shadow till it is called up by another shadow or idea. This is memory. If there was no asociation Corrected: association there would be no memory and those who have the greatest amount of asociation Corrected: association and least wisdom have the strongest memories for wisdom is understanding and presides over all this and relies on science and who rely on their wisdom dwell in the principle remembering cause and effect. While those who rely on observation and opinions are constantly attaching themselves and lives to the laws which man makes and calls laws of health &c.Expanded:et cetera and this they call the law of reason. Such have great memories and hold life in their memory. But the former hold on to the principle more and are forgetful of events. Memory is the pleasure or pain of some cause or event which affects our happiness or misery or of some thingCorrected:something ludicrous. For instance, a man told another man his coat tailCorrected:coattail was short and he replied it will be long before I get another — attempting to repeat the joke forgot the sympathy or music in it and said a man told another his coat tailCorrected:coattail was short and he replied "it will be a long time before I get another one" but the company failing to laugh he continued I see nothing now to laugh at myself but when I heard it I laughed heartily. Memory is the effect of two ideas coming into harmony so as to produce an effect that leaves the sense of some idea either rediculous Corrected: ridiculous or otherwise, embracing so many combinations that it brings up the scene, Memory one of the senses of man and will continue so long as the idea body exists.

Question 11.th

What became of the Jesus after it was laid in the sepulchre if you do not believe it rose?

Ans.Expanded:Answer Jesus was the idea matter and those who believe that Jesus & Christ were one must have believed if they reasoned fairly that body and soul were crucified. Now came their doubts whether this same idea should be resurectedCorrected:resurrected. Some believed that it would others doubted but so far as Christ was concerned opinions could have no effects Christ was the wisdom that knew truth dwelt not in opinions and that matter was but an opinion that could be formed into any shape which the belief gave to it and that the life which moved it came not from it but was outside of it. there was where their wisdom differed the deciples Corrected: disciples believed that the wisdom of man which was his God principle dwelling outside of matter would rise out of the error or idea man for matter is an error ther Corrected: there being no substance which is truth in a thing which changes and is only that which belief makes it and matter comes under the classifecation Corrected: classification of memory. Now I take Christs Corrected: Christ's own words for the truth when he said "touching the dead that they rise" "God is not the God of the dead but the living"Mark 12:26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? Mark 12:27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. He knew they could not understand but to himself Christ went through no change, to his disciples he died. So when they saw him they were af [?] Unclear or illegible rid because they thought he was a spirit but Christ had not forgoten his identity Jesus or flesh and blood. If the christians of this day could have been there with their prese [?] Unclear or illegible nt beliefs I have my doubts whether they could have seen any thingCorrected:anything, or heard a sound. I believe Christ did appear and show himself as dense as their beliefs could be made, but their unbelief made the idea so rarified that it was a spirit to them These are my ideas of the resurection Corrected: resurrection of Christ. but Jesus the world's belief if the people were as they are now was without doubt taken away at any rate their idea man never rose Christ lost nothing by the change every person rises from the dead with their own belief so to themselves they are not risen and know no change and the dead as they are called have no idea of themselves as dead.

Question 12th

Do we recieve Corrected: receive impressions through the senses and they acting on the mind constitute knowledge?

Ans.Expanded:Answer This question is answered by Paul to the Romans although he did not use the same words. This belief meanes Corrected: means faith the peace in the truth was through their belief. Knowledge is opinions so when an impresion Corrected: impression is made on the mind it produces a cemical Corrected: chemical change this comes to the senses and opens a door of hope to this great truth this is the worlds Corrected: world's knowledge or religion that is used like an anchor to the senses till we out rideCorrected:outride the gale of investigation and land in the haven of rest which is God or truth.

Question 13.th

How is matter made the medium of the intelligence of man?

Ans.Expanded:Answer There are two ideas, and one idea is spirit and one matter. When you speak of man you speak of matter when you speak of spirit you speak of knowledge that will live after the matter is destroyed or dead. This is the christian religion. With God or truth all the above is only opinions and ideas with no wisdom All this belief is embraced in his knowledge and is an illusion that contains no life, in knowledge or spiript but lives moves and h [?] Unclear or illegible as its identity in his wisdom. So that to itself it is a living moving some thingCorrected:something with power to act create and to destroy. Its happiness and misery are in itself So when A's. shadow is destroyed, to B. and C. he is dead. So the shadow is the medium of truth and error, to error it is matter, but to truth it is an illusion.

Question 14.th

Do I err in thinking knowledge the effect of some influence on the mind instead of something indipendant Corrected: independent of the whole individual?

Ans.Expanded:Answer No. but you err in thinking that knowledge is wisdom knowledge is the effect of some an influence on the mind and is the medium that carries the senses to the great truth.

This document should not be confused with documents having the same title, The Science of Man, that were written by Mary Baker Eddy. These words are words of the Apostle Paul, not Jesus Christ. Quimby’s method of healing often involved his “taking on” the symptoms of the illnesses his patients were experiencing. One form this could take is that of a transference of the symptoms of a patient’s illness from the patient’s body to his, after which he would then work to overcome the symptoms he was now himself experiencing. In other cases, he would feel the symptoms of the patient without as complete a transference. The Bible quotations and allusions in the remainder of the answer to Question 2 are from this chapter of the Gospel of MatthewMatt 11:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
