I changed the By-lawEditorial Note: Eddy had changed the bylaw regarding serving in Mary Baker Eddy's household to request a term of twelve months for those Christian Scientists called to serve there. relating to your Leader because I found that a term of three months service was inadequate to accomplish the end in view. I found that it took me three months to teach students the new duties that devolved upon them, and when they had learned these duties, some of the students went away from me in my sorest hour of need, and I regret to say it, apparently heartless in regard to my dire necessity. This has at times grieved me almost to death. I who had left all earthly considerations to benefit them and the whole human family for so many years, to be thus deserted, hurt me more than words can tell. Also before I changed the By-law I deeply pondered the example of our great Wayshower when calling his students and compelling them to leave all for him, and his call was without conditions, imperative. So I shaped the By-law in accord- with the scriptural examples. It This By-law may be the hobby of my foes and be criticised by my friends, but such has been the case with all of my movements in the first stages of the history of Christian Science.
