Beloved brethren:
I have a great duty to perform and God has revealed it to me. Herein I name it.
I have learned from bitter experience that one year at
Pleasant View is only a test and
preparation for the next year's experience ― it is only preparatory for another
year wherein to demonstrate what I have taught them the previous year.
Therefore three years is the first scientific term for serving your Leader at Pleasant
View. Having proven this to be correct I have again
amended the By-law on "Opportunity for
Serving the LeaderEditorial Note: The current versionMary Baker Eddy, Manual of The Mother Church 67:24Opportunity for Serving the Leader. Sect. 11.
At the written request of the Pastor Emeri‐
tus, Mrs. Eddy, the Board of Directors shall68:1immediately notify a person who has been a
member of this Church at least three years to
68:3go in ten days to her, and it shall be the duty
of the member thus notified to remain with Mrs.
Eddy three years consecutively. A member who
68:6leaves her in less time without the Directors’
consent or who declines to obey this call to
duty, upon Mrs. Eddy’s complaint thereof shall
68:9be excommunicated from The Mother Church.
Members thus serving the Leader shall be paid
semi-annually at the rate of one thousand dol‐
68:12lars yearly in addition to rent and board. Those
members whom she teaches the course in Divin‐
ity, and who remain with her three consecutive
68:15years, receive the degree of the Massachusetts
Metaphysical College. of this
By-Law can be found in The Manual of
The Mother Church.".
Please act upon this amendment immediately and then do me this great favor: Publish the By-law in the Sentinel with a heading of your own referring briefly to the necessity in ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science of following the order of the periods, and the footsteps of truth as discovered and designated by your Leader, the author of the textbook of Christian ScienceEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Neither pen nor tongue can tell what I have to contend with the first year of the novitiate at Pleasant View.
What precedent have we in all right forms of government for leaving the Leader without due aid wherewith to carry out God's laws in human lines of action?
Every statement in "Science And HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy" I have gained through suffering. Every step of advancement at my home of my own and that of the students is reached in the same "strait and narrowMatt 7:13 ¶Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Matt 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. " way. Hence the scripture "Ye shall indeed drink of my cupMatt 20:23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. "; and "those whom he loveth he chasteneth and scourgeth every son that He receivethHeb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. ."
