Editorial Note: This letter was written during the disciplining, in the fall of 1909, of Augusta E. Stetson, the most prominent member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, New York. Stetson's excommunication from The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts for teaching and conduct contrary to Christian Science, took place on November 18, 1909.

Tell the Directors to make Mrs. Stetson state her religious belief in plain terms that you can publish, and tell her that you will publish them; and if her statement does not accord with our Church Manual, erase her name from our Church membership and publish in our periodicals these facts concerning your discipline As Written: dicipline of Mrs. Augusta E. Stetson.

Do not name me as your authority, but my published works, and say that I abide by them and approve all that is done according to them.
