My dear Sister

I more than regret not being able to be with you personally todayAs Written:to day in the shadow of this solemn hourEditorial Note: Ellen P. Davis's husband, Milo Davis, had died a few days earlier on November 11, 1883. But if I were my words would only be what my thoughts send forth to thee. He is not dead but sleepethMatt 9:18 ¶While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. Matt 9:19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. Matt 9:20 ¶And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: Matt 9:21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. Matt 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. Matt 9:23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, Matt 9:24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. Matt 9:25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. Matt 9:26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. Mark 5:22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, Mark 5:23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. Mark 5:24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him. Mark 5:25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, Mark 5:26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, Mark 5:27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. Mark 5:28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. Mark 5:29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. Mark 5:30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? Mark 5:31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? Mark 5:32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. Mark 5:33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. Mark 5:34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. Mark 5:35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? Mark 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. Mark 5:37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. Mark 5:38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. Mark 5:39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. Mark 5:40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. Mark 5:41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha
cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
Mark 5:42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. Mark 5:43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat. Luke 8:41 ¶And, behold, there came a man named
Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus’ feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:
Luke 8:42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a-dying. But as he went the people thronged him. Luke 8:43 ¶And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, Luke 8:44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. Luke 8:45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? Luke 8:46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. Luke 8:47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. Luke 8:48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. Luke 8:49 ¶While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. Luke 8:51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. Luke 8:52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. Luke 8:53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. Luke 8:54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. Luke 8:55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. Luke 8:56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done. John 11:1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. John 11:2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) John 11:3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. John 11:4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. John 11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. John 11:6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. John 11:7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again. John 11:8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? John 11:9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. John 11:10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. John 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. John 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. John 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. John 11:15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. John 11:16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. John 11:17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. John 11:18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: John 11:19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. John 11:20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. John 11:21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. John 11:22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. John 11:23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. John 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: John 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? John 11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. John 11:28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. John 11:29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. John 11:30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. John 11:31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. John 11:32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. John 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, John 11:34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. John 11:35 Jesus wept. John 11:36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! John 11:37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? John 11:38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. John 11:39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. John 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? John 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. John 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. John 11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. John 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

And the ApostleEditorial Note: Paul saith the Spirit beareth witnesseth with our spirit that we are the children of God and if children then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him that we may be also glorified together.Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

I see in this divine consolation and healing for you and the dear departed. First the testimony of the Spirit that man is immortal and the inheritor of the perfect Spirit which was also in Christ JesusPhil 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: hence his progress out of sin is certain whether it be here or hereafter.

2ond That the sufferings of the flesh tend towards the unfolding of spiritual blessedness and glory. Such as the senses material cannot reach; that eye hath not seen nor ear heardI Cor 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. ; and this crucifixion of the flesh seemeth grievousHeb 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. , but it worketh out to themII Cor 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; who interpret it aright a permanent peace and bliss of Soul that more than compensates for all that we endure in the journey to heaven.

Look up, the light of His presence and Love shineth, although clouds are about thee.

The great Shekinah As Written: shekina rests in tender halo upon this day in thy life's lessons. Thou art begirt with love and by thy firey trials purified and made to reflect His likeness

Let my unspoken benediction rest on the tender boy who sits meekly mute in his first grief and my prayer go forth for the elder son that he now returns to the chastened hope of greater happiness in his greater responsibilities to thee. Let me say Son, behold thy Mother!John 19:25 ¶Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of
Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! John 19:27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
and be her consolation under this great bereavement.
