If as Emerson advises As Written: adises you "harness your wagon to a starEditorial Note: Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay titled "American Civilization" was published in The Atlantic in April 1862 and popularized the phrase "Hitch your wagon to a star."," you look upward; but if to me, you look into strife and rise upward through great tribulation. My earth-life is that of a weathercock – it turns, veers and stops with the winds of circumstance. Your last copyEditorial Note: Gorham was assistant editor and literary advisor for Mary Baker Eddy's Miscellaneous Writings, 1883-1896. shows me it is wise for me to look over the copy first and you afterwards. None but the author sees certain needs in the copy, and the less written by any other person the better. Why? Because I say things from a different standpoint than another person can, – and this person can see the grammar that I have measurably forgotten, – but cannot see my vision of the new tongueMark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; and of human need.

Thus, dear one, I need your patience to bear with me, and to drink with me my "cup."Matt 20:22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. Matt 20:23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. Mark 10:38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? Mark 10:39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: I see it is best for you to make all corrections on the first copy, then send as usual the package to me weekly, and I will add what God directs and return to you by "Messenger bird,"Editorial Note: While Mary Baker Eddy was compiling Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, she often sent Laura E. Sargent back and forth between her home in Concord and the publisher's office in Boston with manuscripts and proofs. For this courier work, Eddy nicknamed Sargent "my 'pigeon' ... for she is a bright bearer of messages." (See L05990) and you forward to printer and read and watch proof, and I see only the page proofs.
