I have a favor to ask, one that reverses the evidence of sense with the demand of ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science. And this request may be startling, because I have so recently proffered one to you the very reverse of this one.

But what I gained from your frankness– that I honor– in the class, causes this request. My pain and disappointment at seeing your state of mind is better imagined than described. As it is, I must bear it. Old Theology and the Schools cling to you to such an extent, even yet, that I fear you will leave us eventually and then you may be tempted to do as malicious mind prompts all to do, take with you many of my best students who are not watching as they will sometime learn the need of doing — away from what I know to be the only real Christian Science. To guard against this sadder result, this is my present petition, in all love and respect proffered to you. If you feel that Christian ScienceAs Written:Chris. Sci. as laid down in Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy is not what is genuine, you cannotAs Written:can not surely feel justified in promulgating it. Therefore I ask, yea, I beg you to resign your place now in this field to someoneAs Written:some one who is sound in this Science, and let us still be friends, and you a fair foe, if indeed you must be this to the truths of Christian Science.

Please ponder this in your heart alone and name it not. Any council from others on this question is not safe. Go to God alone for wisdom to enable you to deal with this subject justly, and as you would love to contemplate your action in time to come. Please do me the justice to see at what a sacrifice I give you up, in this field of labor, one in which I had hoped to reap such a harvest from your labors for our cause. But of two evils this last named is the least to chooseAs Written:chose. As ever most truly your Friend
