"Boston Miracles"

Separating the tares and WheatMatt 13:24 ¶Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: Matt 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. Matt 13:26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. Matt 13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? Matt 13:28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? Matt 13:29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Matt 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. .

Having for many years had a knowledge of Christian science, properly so called, and being especially interested in that department relating to the metaphysical method of treating disease, I would not have its stately workings and its Organizations presented to the public through uninformed criticism.

Christian Science and its metaphysical As Written: metaphysi practice was discovered and introduced into this stateEditorial Note: Massachusetts in the year 1866 by Mary B. Glover, (now Mrs. Eddy); in the year 1879 Mrs. Eddy and her students organized the "Church of Christ, (Scientist)" according to the General Statutes, (see charter no 968.); and November 9, 1881 Mrs. Eddy was regularly ordained its pastor. This religious Organization has met with slow, because sure growth. Some disaffected students have occasionally broken the ranks but they have closed again and walked evenly on. Our regular place of worship is, at present the Hawthorne House no. 2: Park street. Our services in general are like those of other Evangelical churches the exception is what we understand to be a more spiritual method of service and explanation of the Scripture which tend to elucidate the principle of Christian healing. We here append, the Tenets and covenant As Written: covenent of the Church of Christ (Scientist).

I: As adherents to Truth we take the Scriptures for our guide to eternal life.

II. We rest our hope and faith on God as the only Life, Truth, and Love, depending for salvation not on the person of God but the understanding of the divine Principle that is God and its demonstration casting out all error and healing the sick according to the demands of our MasterEditorial Note: Jesus Christ.

III. And we solemnly covenant to faithfully obey the Ten CommandmentsEx 20:1 And God spake all these words, saying, Ex 20:2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Ex 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Ex 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Ex 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Ex 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Ex 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Ex 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Ex 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: Ex 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: Ex 20:11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Ex 20:12 ¶Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Ex 20:13 Thou shalt not kill. Ex 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Ex 20:15 Thou shalt not steal. Ex 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Ex 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. to "deal justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God"Mic 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? . To strive habitually by Christian growth to reach the higher understanding of Christian Science contained in the sermon on the mountMatt 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. , and to rest all that we do on the Principle Divine of the life of Jesus and his followers

In the year 1881 there was founded a corporation under the act of the General Assembly of 1874, known as the Mass. Metaphysical College. Mrs. Eddy became the principal of this Institution that is educating a select class of students for the field of Christian healing. Her students number about seven hundred. [?] Unclear or illegible

At the period of this maiden innovation upon materialistic methods of medicine ample opportunity has been offered and improved by some unprincipled and some unqualified aspirants to claim her method and principle of treating disease, but this fact is overlooked because it is so sedulously concealed and the system not sufficiently understood by the public to warrant at present the proper distinguishment That "the founder of this theory have not stumbled blindly upon some fragments of Science" is seen by the following

I have been intimately acquainted with Mrs Eddy the founder of Christian Science for many years. Her life has ever been one of self-sacrificeAs Written:self sacrifice, her humility and remarkable intellectual and religions growth. In the greater part of her early years she was a slave to prevailing theories, she passed the routine of medical treatment from the regular to the "new" school, and studied the homeopathic theory of practice but afterwards found there was a more subtle potency for healing in the words of DerzhavinEditorial Note: Russian poet Gavriil Derzhavin.: -

[?] Unclear or illegible

And the next step is spirit Deity.
Editorial Note: This is from the longer poem, "God," by Derzhavin.

Commenced experimenting in medicine and attenuated drugs to a degree that satisfied her there an original property left while their potency was menacedAs Written: menased . Often healing with unmedicated pellets etc.. Here her unusual confidence in God's overruling power led her to conclude it was not an innate quality of matter but was Mind that quickened into conscious harmony and health. These views were substantially As Written: substancially verified by her self cure the remarkable history of which can be substantiated As Written: substanciated proven by living witnesses.

"A mind healer" is not "a person who is full to superabundance upon his own cognizance of the Almighty As Written: Allmighty and who is willing to allow his superfluity to overflow into the person of some patient" through the "spinal column" alias animal magnetism - if that healer is a Christian Scientist. Said critic must have mistaken such an one in his fire and landed his bomb with magnetic healers, rubbists, willpower folks mesmerists and mal-practitioners who work on no given basis

The scientific healer sits not back to back with his patient he is not afraid to look the sick in the face Certain self styled As Written: stiled teachers are permitting their students such methods probably because they are ashamed to have them look their patients in the face.

You say "if the mind curers are even supporters of some form of magnetic treatment it is contended that it would be far better to say so honestly rather than offer for sale the emanations As Written: emmations of an omnipotent and omniscient Deity", etc. We reply you have only to read "Science and Health"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. our standard work for the principle and practice of Christian Science . That explains the ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science and its purely mental method and explains the opposite of ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science as just the methods you refer to.

In conclusion I will say - Mrs Eddy can be found at her residence no. 569 Columbus ave., Boston where she receives calls Monday and Friday P.M. from all desiring an honest investigation of this subject.
