Kate I. Barker (1838-1904) was born in Bethel, Maine and died in Santa
Barbara, California. She was a patient of George D. Choate, a student of Mary Baker
Eddy's, who practiced in Bethel, Maine, for a few years. Choate's treatment of Barker
was unsuccessful, with both Eddy and Choate blaming the mesmeric influence of dissident
student Richard Kennedy.
