P. T. (Phineas Taylor) Barnum (1810-1891) was born in Bethel, Connecticut, and died in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was an author, politician, and businessman, perhaps best known today for his "Greatest Show on Earth," later called the Barnum & Bailey Circus. In 1865, he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, serving two terms as the representative for the Fairfield district. In 1874, he was elected mayor of Bridgeport and served one term (1875-1876). Barnum also authored several books, including Life of P.T. Barnum (1854), The Humbugs of the World (1865), and The Art of Money-Getting (1880).
