Walter E. Beardwell (1833-1893) was born in Ipswich, England, and died in Brooklyn, New York. As a young person he was apprenticed to a printer in Colchester, England, later becoming a journeyman. In about 1852 he married Maria Beardwell (b. Finch) in Colchester. She was a dressmaker. Beardwell immigrated to the United States in the 1860s, living in Cincinnati for about a year before settling in Brooklyn. He began working as a printer for the New York Evening Post then in 1883 started working at the Brooklyn Daily Times, a position he held for the rest of his life. He became a naturalized citizen in 1888. In 1886 Beardwell wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to express his interest in learning more about Christian Science and to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
