Harriet L. Betts (b. Gardner) (1847-1937) was born in Troy, New York, and died in Los Angeles, California. In the late 1860s she attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and in 1875 she married Edgar K. Betts in Lansingburgh, New York. He was the proprietor of a collar manufacturing company, and they settled in Lansingburgh. In 1886 Betts became interested in Christian Science upon witnessing her brother-in-law's healing through Christian Science treatment; whereupon, she sought and received her own healing of a longstanding ailment. Betts studied Christian Science with Mary Baker Eddy twice, completing the Primary in March 1888 and the Normal, along with her husband, in November 1898. Betts joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 5, 1892, her husband joined on December 29, 1894, and their daughter, Ethel K. Barnhisel (b. Betts), joined on October 5, 1895.

Betts was a practitioner and teacher listed in The Christian Science Journal from 1893 until her passing. Her husband studied Christian Science with her and also became a practitioner listed in the Journal. In 1889 Betts began giving parlor talks and leading Christian Science services in Lansingburgh. In the late 1890s she moved back to Troy, where she helped establish First Church of Christ, Scientist, Troy, and became its first First Reader. Betts was called to work in Eddy's Pleasant View household for six weeks in December 1902 and January 1903. She was a member of the National Christian Science Association and the General Association of Teachers. She also authored several articles for publication in the Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel. She moved to Los Angeles sometime around 1932.
