Sereno A. Bowers (1847-1912) was born and died in New York, New York. He
was an artist and worked as a photographer in Burlington, Vermont. By 1891 he was living
in Concord, New Hampshire, and Mary Baker Eddy had her portrait taken by him that
November. In December 1892 Bowers worked with painter James F. Gilman to create
photographs and sketches of Pleasant View, Eddy's home in New Hampshire, as a present
for Eddy. One of these would eventually be used as her letterhead. Bowers' photographs
of Pleasant View were also used in
Pleasant View: Twenty Plates of the
Home Surroundings of Rev. Mary Baker Eddy (1894), a book of photographs and
sketches of the interior and exterior of Pleasant View published by Gilman and H. E.
Carlton. During the early 1890s Bowers also assisted Eddy in business transactions
concerning Pleasant View; however, he eventually fell into disfavor with her over his
broken promises. Sometime between 1900 and 1902 Bowers returned to New York City, and in
1907 he was associated with Technical Photo Company.
