Albert M. Brown (1837-1900) was born in Van Etten, New York, and died in Aurora, Illinois. At the age of fifteen, he moved to Trumansburg, New York, to become an apprentice in the mercantile business. He moved to Aurora, Illinois, in 1856 and worked as a clerk for L. Titsworth & Son, a hardware company. Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War, Brown enlisted as a private in Company C of the 7th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry, mustering out as a corporal. He subsequently worked as a grocer and a farmer until about 1877 when he bought into the J. H. Thompson & Co. boot and shoe dealership. In 1883 he acquired its full ownership and established himself as A. M. Brown, dealer in boots, shoes, and rubber goods. In 1884 he was also appointed Postmaster of North Plato, Illinois.

In 1862 in DuPage County, Illinois, he married Fidelia S. Brown (b. Stanley), who later became one of Mary Baker Eddy's students. Brown took the Primary class in Christian Science from Adelia "Delia" P. Hanson, also one of Eddy's students. He and his wife both joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 6, 1895, and both were listed as practitioners in The Christian Science Journal from 1897 until their respective passings. Brown also served as First Reader in First Church of Christ, Scientist, Aurora. He was a member of the Grand Old Army, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Independent Order of Mutual Aid, and the American Legion of Honor. He was also the secretary/treasurer of the Aurora Edison Incandescent Light Company which he instrumental in establishing.
