Meric S. Brown (1841-1909) was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and died in Portland, Oregon. He moved to Forreston, Illinois, by 1860, and served as a private in Company D, 93rd Regiment of the Illinois Infantry in the American Civil War. Over his career, Brown worked as a traveling salesman, butcher, grocer, farmer, and real estate agent. In 1864 he married Samantha A. Brown (b. Deuel) in Stephenson County, Illinois. Sometime prior to 1870 they moved to Vienna, Iowa, and by 1880 to Marshalltown, Iowa. In 1888 they moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Samantha was one of Mary Baker Eddy's students, a member of the Christian Scientist Association, and a Christian Science Practitioner. She died in 1893, and in 1894 Brown married Anna M. Brown (b. Davis) in Omaha. They moved to West Butte, Oregon, by 1900 and after that to Portland. Brown was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Oddfellows, and the Knights of Pythias.
