Sarah B. Butts (b. Bailey) (1833-1899) was born in Wiscasset, Maine, and
died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1881 she married Bryan J. Butts, a professor, author,
poet, and publisher, in Milford, Massachusetts. It was the second marriage for Bryan and
the third for Sarah. On the official record of their marriage they wrote, "Under protest
to the subjugation of the wife to the conjugal or financial ownership of her husband, or
vice versa." They moved to Milwaukee sometime before 1890. Butts's husband wrote to Mary
Baker Eddy at least twice in the late 1880s to comment on Eddy's work and to apprise her
of his.
