John H. Cameron (1857-1918) was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and died in Chicago, Illinois. He immigrated to Chicago in 1881. He worked as an assistant cashier before becoming a broker at the National Bank of the Republic, and he married May P. Cameron (b. Phoenix), a concert and choir soloist, in Delavan, Wisconsin, in 1884. The Camerons studied Christian Science with Edward A. Kimball, a student of Mary Baker Eddy, and were members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, Illinois; they both sang at the church's dedication in 1887, and John Cameron served as First Reader in 1901 and 1902. They joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 3, 1897. In June 1902 Eddy offered Cameron the position of First Reader of The Mother Church; however, he wished to remain in Chicago and politely declined.
