Valeria J. Campbell (1848-1915) was born in Poland, Ohio, and died in Des Moines, Iowa. By 1860 she had moved with her family to Washington Township, Iowa, and by 1870 to Indianola, Iowa, where she became a teacher. By 1880 she was living and teaching in Ottumwa, Iowa, moving to Des Moines in the latter half of the 1880s, where she taught primary school. Campbell was introduced to Christian Science in 1886 by her roommate's friend, who loaned her a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Soon thereafter Campbell's sister, Maurine R. Campbell, visited her and also began reading Science and Health. They then both took a class from Mary Baker Eddy's student Mary E. Harris, who was in Des Moines at the time. Campbell later took another class from Eddy's student Belle Pew.
She joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 1, 1893. Her parents, James W. Campbell and Elizabeth Campbell (b. Riddle), joined on September 30, 1893, and Maurine joined on December 31, 1892. Campbell was a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science and was listed in The Christian Science Journal from 1889 until her passing. In 1887 she published a book titled Little Poems for Little Children: Suitable for Memorizing for Recitation at School and at Home, an inscribed copy of which she sent to Eddy in 1893. She also wrote several articles for publication in the Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel.
