Anna Kimball Chainey (1827-1920) was born in Dunkirk, New York, and died in Coronado, California. She was a lecturer, medium, spiritualist, and occultist. Together with Marie Countess Caithness, Kimball started the Star Circle, a Spiritualist society, in the 1870s to explore the communications of Mary, Queen of Scots, through Kimball's mediumship. She married George Chainey in 1888 and divorced him in 1903, citing abandonment. Together they published and edited The Gnostic (1885-1888), a monthly journal devoted to Spiritual Science and Universal Theosophy. From 1886 to 1888 the Chaineys toured and lectured around Australia and New Zealand. In 1888, they separated upon their return to the United States, and Kimball was advertised as conducting "Spiritual Science" courses in Portland, Oregon.
