Anna Kimball Chainey (1827-1920) was born in Dunkirk, New York, and died
in Coronado, California. She was a lecturer, medium, spiritualist, and occultist.
Together with Marie Countess Caithness, Kimball started the Star Circle, a Spiritualist
society, in the 1870s to explore the communications of Mary, Queen of Scots, through
Kimball's mediumship. She married George Chainey in 1888 and divorced him in 1903,
citing abandonment. Together they published and edited
The
Gnostic (1885-1888), a monthly journal devoted to Spiritual Science and
Universal Theosophy. From 1886 to 1888 the Chaineys toured and lectured around Australia
and New Zealand. In 1888, they separated upon their return to the United States, and
Kimball was advertised as conducting "Spiritual Science" courses in Portland,
Oregon.
