Joshua Coit (1831-1907) was born in New London, Connecticut, and died in
Winchester, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Yale University (1853) and Andover
Theological Seminary (1856). In 1860, he was ordained pastor of the Congregational
church at Brookfield, Massachusetts, where he preached for 11 years. From 1874 until the
end of 1882, he served as pastor of the Lawrence Street Congregational Church in
Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 1883, he started work as the Secretary of the Massachusetts
Home Missionary Society, a position he held until his retirement in 1903.
