George Joseph Lunt Colby (1819-1890) was born and died in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, as part of the class of 1842, but he left after his freshman year to pursue a career in journalism. He went on to become the editor of several newspapers based in Amesbury and Newburyport, Massachusetts: Essex Transcript (1844-1845), Daily Evening Union (1851-1854), Daily Herald (1855-1871), Merrimac Valley Visitor (1872-1881), and Merrimac Journal (1872-1881).
