Emma E. Cooley (b. Erwin) (1852-1936) was born in New York and died in San Diego, California. When she was young, she traveled the world collecting butterfly, bird, and sea specimens, some of which would later be bought by the Smithsonian. She married Maurice W. Cooley, a civil engineer, in Toledo, Ohio, in 1887. They eventually lived in Mack, Colorado, during the turn of the century, and by 1910 they were living in Dragon, Utah. It seems as though the couple eventually parted ways, and Emma moved to San Diego around 1921.

The Cooleys studied Christian Science with Sarah J. Clark, a student of Mary Baker Eddy, sometime during the 1880s, and they later joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 31, 1892. Cooley was a member of the National Christian Scientist Association and the Christian Science Dispensary Association. She served as assistant editor of The Christian Science Journal in 1891 and filled in as acting editor in September 1892. The Cooleys were active Christian Scientists, and in 1898 they assisted in the construction of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Toledo, Ohio, of which Maurice was Chairman of the Board of Trustees. They were both listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal as Christian Science practitioners in Toledo from 1894 to 1898, after which Maurice stopped but Emma continued to be listed in Toledo through 1901 and when she traveled to Trinidad and Tobago from 1904-1905.
