Elisha Dayton (1817-1884) was born in Riverhead, New York, and died in Marengo, Illinois. Dayton was a Universalist minister and, for many years, the Overseer of the Poor, an elected official who administered aid to the poor, in Huntley and Grafton, Illinois. At the time he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy, he was retired and living in Marengo, Illinois, with his daughter and son-in-law, Josephine D. and Ira R. Curtiss. There is no record of Dayton studying with Mary Baker Eddy or uniting with the Church of Christ (Scientist).
